My god, what a terrible thing

The hospital, in a letter, wrote that if she wanted to find out exactly what happened, she would have to sue them.

Something not quite right about this story as I I can't see how they can withhold this information legally and there has got to be more to it.

Whereas group A streptococcus causes strep throat, group B streptococcus are normal bacteria that live in the vaginas of up to 30 percent of women, according to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). The bacteria also live in the urethra of men.

Seems pretty common. I am curious why that happened...

Hmm...actually, I think it's the Group A Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome, aka "flesh eating disease", not Group B Streptococcal as you linked.
http://0-www.cdc.gov.mill1.sjlibrary...o3/stevens.htm
Anyways...I didn't read it all...but I did skim it over...and it said vaginal birth is one method by which the bacteria has entered the body in many cases.
So, umm.... I am guessing the question left to be answered is ... "how did she get it to begin with?"

to quote from the story: "Her 7-year-old son, Jorge, asks his mother over and over what happened to her. Neither she nor her husband has the answer."
-this is just plain awful.

The number one cause of deaths in the USA is 'medical treatment'.
No kidding. Doctors, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry kill more people in the US than car accidents or any other death cause.
