My mom blocked the internet!!!!!!!

Yes, it is true. She actually managed to block the entire internet!! Or so close that it didn't matter. She called me at work this afternoon and was having problems getting my nephew registered for something from the internet. She told me she couldn't get to ANYTHING! I figured she just had a bad link or mistyping a URL or something like that.

She said, "No, something popped up and I told it to Block or something. I think I blocked the internet."

I told her, "No, there is no way you blocked the internet. You can't do that. No program would allow you to do that."

Well....now I sit at her computer after about 40 minutes of trying to figure out what the hell she did. It is true. She managed to block the Internet!! (there aren't enough of these to express my shock)

Turns out, with one quick click in Norton's Protection dialogs, you can block Internet Explorer from any access to the Internet

I'm never letting her live this one down

Well back in about 1995 I was using a terminal program ProComm and my sister, while I was out, decided to try to figure what it was all about. When I got back my computer was toast. I had to reformat the whole damn thing. Never figured out exactly what she did or how, but there after I put a password on my computer.

Hi there,

Norton would of simply block your proxy settings, or port 80 from going outbound/inbound. Try unblocking port 80 and see whether it works from there. without actually seeing it, it is too hard to help. good luck .

Regards,
Kieran Taylor.

If you are talking about norton interset security I believe it...
They should have called it norton internet blocker because it sees everything as a threat even if its not. I tried it once... for about 10 minutes

Some firewalls like Zone Alarm allow you to block all the access to internet. Just in case you have spyware or some programs sending data to the outside.

I'll tell her, Cricket. Her timing was certainly pretty good for me too. Even though I had to admit after telling her I was absolutely, posivitely, irrevocably, 100% certain she did not block the internet....that I was wrong and she had absolutely, positively, fortunately not irrevocably, 100% blocked the internet Once I figured it out we all laughed pretty good and I needed it last night. She will appreciate knowing this. She didn't believe me when I told her I had to post this on the forum. It was too classic in too many ways to pass up.

I still haven't figured out what she did that made Norton thin IE, of all things, was doing something unusual enough to ask about blocking it!

And Isla, the only reason I haven't reformated the parent's computer more than I have is they are a bit timid on exploring, thank God for small miracles

Tanya, you say oopsie like you might have done something like this? Please tell me I am mistaken.

Luckyman, I'm not a kid but my parents only live about 10 minutes away from me.

Another funny part to this story is my mom was absolutely desperate to git this fixed last night. It's been a long week and I told her if she wanted to bring the laptop over I would try to fix it. She wasn't willing to go there and eventually I gave in and headed over. Turns out she was desparate because she didn't realize that playing freecell did not require the internet! She is working her way through winning all 100,000 games. In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined my mom as a computer gamer!

Oh, well, until the next parent computer adventure.

Easy fix: Right click on the "Norton Internet Security" icon from the right hand side of the start bar (by the clock). You need to tell it to allow traffic again.

Its almost as good as upgrading your windows 2000 server to windows 2003 SP1 remotely. I did this once and the server booted up into "shields up" mode and "protected itself" from the network!!!
