well,our community provides school supplies like bags to the children and that's what I've been using when I was in 3rd grade.

my grandfather bought me a black bag with a single strap that goes around the chest.
i didn't like it then, but now, everyone has that bag.

One bag? I had backpacks, and I had far too many to recall. With all the damn books I had to haul, those things wore out fast.
