Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty, India please explain
If you live in India can you explain what all the fuss is?
He only gave her a pretend kiss on the cheak.
Should these two really be crucified, what do you think?
Why is the land that gave us the Karma Sutra now so prudish about you know what ?

They view their ladies in a different light than he's used to. To them he disrespected her and the culture. If you're going to visit other places you need to learn a little about the culture.
If a visiting entertainer slapped our first lady on the butt during a TV broadcast America would react similarly, even if that was cool in his culture.

One thing.... it was not just a peck on the cheek
and not just one kiss either.......
i dont think it would have been such a big issue if it has been just a peck on the cheek...
but it was over reaction at any rate.
this has become a regular thing
with some famous actors and actress also been dragged to court because of kissing scenes in movies........
i agree with "South" though.
every country has its own culture and people should learn something about it before visiting the place.
in this case it was more media hype than anything else which blew up the whole issue out of proportions

Shilpa has it all. Richard Gere could have been more patient.

Too much fuss.
They do something to help the people, he probably gets carried away with the moment and makes a mistake and then all this.

For those keeping score, it all began back on April 15th, when Gere appeared at an AIDS awareness rally in Jaipur, India. During his onstage plea to promote condom use among truck drivers, the American actor affectionately grabbed and pecked Bollywood superstar Shilpa Shetty three times on the cheek.

It was an error of judgement and should have been taken this far.

Thanks for replying.
This and many other incidents have given me the impression that India is going back to Victorian values. And baring in mind that this event was to promote Aids awareness, which is an enormous issues in India and Africa where nations find it difficult to afford the drugs to treat those with the disease, I find it disturbing that an extreme minority were allowed to hijack such an important event.
The judge who allowed this proceedings to go ahead in the regional courts should have known better.
Admittedly Gere should have behaved a little better. He is a frequent visitor to India, promoting many good things that he is involved in, so he had no excuse, he really should have some understanding of the present situation. But ...
He was there to help promote this event and his actions got the media attention it needed. And as for Shetty, she never had a choice in the matter, so why was she being persecuted?
With rumours that couples can't even hold hands in public, India seems to be going backwards not forwards in terms of individual freedoms.
Is this a fair comment ?

I don't think it's a matter of backward or forward, but rather what the culture at large sees as appropriate. What political system does India use?

India is the biggest democracy in the world, population over 1 billion.
Its obvious they know how to do it, so why is there a minority of prudes telling the sensible folk what to do? I guess that's humanity all over.

I do not think it is a matter of being prudish as it was a matter of respect for the women in their country. If I remember correctly...she tried to avoid his kiss. Hence the dip.

OMG, I'm just sick of these Hollywood actors who think they can behave the way they want everywhere teaching "backworld" people how to live, I think Gere demonstrated his utter disrespect for the woman. And he was leading anti-AIDS campaign?!!!

Looking at the picture the woman doesn't seem to make such a point out of it.
