Blackout oddity
The power went out about 40 minutes ago, which really sucks cause I was almost done one of my tasks to submit. I swore a little, and went to go take a shower, figuring it'd be back up by the time I needed to dry my hair. No luck.
Regardless, no power = no router/modem = no internet, even though my laptop battery is raaring to go. But just for fun, I clicked around and found that one of my neighbours has an unsecured network functioning. As more than the entire block has no power, how is this possible?

Depends on how the area is gridded at the main office.
You having no power but your neighbor has is perfectly feasible.
Either that or he's and alien thats having his power supplied from Mars - Your call

We're in the middle of a grid and no one within wireless range has power.
Creepy!

i think blackouts are romantic.
candles are forced out of their drawers and we're all made to live like in those days URL and pagerank didn't matter

I have power back up, but it is strange that he knows enough to back up his computers power supply, but not enough to secure his network.

umm.. Someone told me that there is no power problem in USA, Canada, etc. Anyways, he must have battery backup.
Over here in my city, light certainly goes off once in 24hrs and returns back after an hour when it's summer. Fortunately, I've got a power invertor that takes care of my electricity needs in such cases.
I'm really happy when it's winter over here 'cause light rarely goes off in this season.

Considering all our power lines are above ground suspended between big poles, when there are bad storms...the power goes out in some areas. And also...in the summer when it's warm, it seems like everyone in my area fires up the A/C, which sometimes causes an overload..and then everyone's power goes out for a while. Argh. And I believe California does rolling blackouts from time to time. So, um..yea we have problems. And...didn't you hear about the big blackout of 2003... that was really creepy, and it was hot and awful.

Thanks, Julie!
It seems like in the summer, power goes off over here in my city because of similar problems (lots of people firing up A/C). Over here, people misuse power a lot. When it's winter, power rarely goes off twice or thrice in a month in my area.
You know, the Indian politicians are major problems for us general public. When it's too hot over here, they order electricity control board to take the power off from general colonies and keep the lights on in government quarters. Although we don't have to worry about thunderstorms, the politicians are dangerous than that.
By the way, how is the condition of electricity in villages over there in the USA and Canada? I can't even think to spend two days in my village because of the huge electricity problem in rural areas.

That day I worked downtown. My "second last day of work", but actually my last day. I walked home most of the way. 3.5 hours of walking - I eventually broke my cheap office shoes and walked without shoes.
Even with that I was only halfway home.

Wow. That had to suck.
We lost power last Oct. for 3 days due to storms. It sucked.

It was quite a good experience, actually. It was nice to walk with other people, lots of business people in suits, collars undone in the heat. People on their front lawn with hoses offerring water for refreshment, home lines for calling home. Neighbours talking to eachother.
It was nice.
