So I've started the Master Cleanse diet (aka. The Lemonade Diet) today and will do it for 10 days.
Recently, a teammate of mine on the independent league baseball team I play on did this detox/diet and lost 14lbs in the 10 days. He wasn't overweight by any means, but did the cleanse more as a way to detox his body as well as tone up a little before his wedding. Since completing the cleanse, he's continued to lose weight and stay in great shape, so I figured why not give it a shot.
So today is day one...so far...so good. Obviously it will get rougher as the day goes by and the next few days are supposed to be brutal. But I figure after a long weekend of BBQ, Beer and laziness...my body could benefit from this.
I feel very energetic right now, but imagine I will flatline here soon. ha.
Many people are critical of this method of dieting, which is understandable. When I first heard my teammate was doing this, I was one of the many giving him grief for it. But as I've read more, I figure I will give it a shot and see how it goes.
I will keep you all posted on how this is going as the days go on.
Ugh. I agree the wiki article makes my innards wiggle with fear. This sounds like one of those diets that's too good to be true. Not to mention that losing 14 pounds in 10 days doesn't fit with what I've read about healthy weight loss. I'd recommend the boring but long-term effective method of lifestyle change, diet, and exercise.
So far today is going well. Last night was ROUGH. I stayed up until just after 1am last night working and by that point I was starving. Which is also making this morning a little tough because I'm a bit tired and usually I start every morning with a Red Bull...but instead, today I'm chuggin down some nasty lemonade.
I've been told the first 3 days are the toughest, then after that it almost becomes routine...so we'll see. I think this weekend will be the ultimate test. I'm pretty confident I should make it through the 10 days. Just looking forward to completing the detox.
I'll continue to keep you all posted...especially if I give in and eat a whole cow.
I've fasted before, having nothing but liquid. After the first initial hunger pains, it's not highly noticeable unless you force it. Just have to stay distracted.
Interesting diet concept, I've never heard of it. The calorie count has got to be practically zero - so, once someone goes off of the liquid diet and the laxatives, and eats a 'normal' amount of food - won't they gain weight back immediately?
Best of luck to you, though. Your experience with this program will be an interesting thread to follow.
Sounds wrong to me, but then again, most detox diets are a farce.
At the end of the day, eat healthily with plenty of fruit and veg, veg not overcooked so as not to lose the nutrients. Oh yes, and drink plenty of water.
Read up on the Patrick Holfords work as this may help a little more.
btw - I do agree that the weight may come on even more when food is reintroduced again.
I agree with G10 agreeing with chicgeek. When you starve yourself, your metabolism shuts down as a defense mechanism. You might lose weight on this diet, but mostly it's only water and cellular waste - not actually fat.

Flaccid... that's a tough word for a dude to take. Use with caution.
On this whole detox/diet thing, some people have suggested using parasites as weight loss or weight maintaining tools. You swallow some pills, out break the little wormies, then they live in your intestines and swallow up excess food. Then you don't gain weight, in theory. Personally, the idea makes me a little nauseous... but so does the diet described above...

Please tell me you just made that up?
The 'lemonade' diet sounds really good compared to filling my GI tract up with worms. . . .

I'm sorry to say that I did not make that up. If I had, I'd be running to the patent office (I'm sure this concept is already filed). Parasitologists have actually discussed this. If I can find a link I'll post it.
