Why do they call it a coaster?
Doesn't "coast" imply movement?
Other than movement from the coaster to my mouth I dont see any "coasting " going on.

i like to think coasters are wheelless skateboards for your glass.
you give the glass a push, and there it coasts across the table, spilling
grape juice.


but yeah, youre right, coaster is one curious name.

Ah! I love a good philosophical discussion. But first, another linguistic maw of poo: Buildings. They're not still being built, so shouldn't they be called "buildeds?" Bizarre as a talking hamster.

Anyway... here's what the online etymology dictionary had to say about "coaster":
