How do you come second in a one horse race?

A lady entered her cake in a competition, later to find she was the only entrant. She only won the second prize.

I would be gutted.

The judges must be brain dead.
You enter, take part, no one else takes part you win.
Politics sometimes has one runner, they must have a better manager, they manage to always win the election.

In competitions at fairs in the US, prizes often are more like "grades" first prize is like getting a A in school, second prize is like getting a B and so on. If there are many entrants, there can be many first prizes, many second and so on.

However, the fairs also have separate prizes for the "best in show" etc. Only one person gets that-- but that's only awarded if at least one person got a "first prize". If everyone turned in wretched stuff, there is no "best in show"!
