Where is the best place to learn Writing Copy?

Recently the subject of writing ad copy came up. It seems from all I here that this is where the real difference is made from mediocre sales to extraordinary. I was wondering where you would direct someone wanting to learn CopyWriting without going to a regular college or university?

Thank you,
Hubert

People do not learn to be 'good copywriters' at schools. At schools/universities they only teach grammar and 'how' to write correctly in any given language. The actual 'writing skills' is a matter of talent. Some people have it, most people don't. You can't learn to be a 'good writer' at schools. "life-experience" and talent is what makes a good writer.

Agreed with what Ferre has said, but I'd like to add a little more. Along with talent it also depends on your effort you make to learn about it. Effective writing whether it's an article, newsletter or a sales copy is the product of good content knowledge and effective writing style with the ability to grab readers' attention. And all these traits cannot be developed within a day or two, instead it's a continuous process and needs assessment everytime you write something new.

You yourself are the most authentic institution that develops an excellent copywriter. Do it yourself! In order to start learning about copywriting start reading more and more about it, discuss the points with copywriters on web forums, practice writing copy, get your copy criticized (it'll tell you the flaws in your writing), and of course keep on learning about the new trends, behaviors, interests etc.

Regards,

What was said above remains true: schools teach grammar and mechanics, not voice, emotion, or flow. However, having a degree in copywriting (at least on this side of the pond) will increase your chances of employment in that field. But a great portfolio of writing samples really does the trick. Just keep writing and seek out objective feedback. That will give you an idea.

For example, here's my portfolio:

Me write good. You like?

Haven't had any offers yet, but I'm sure perseverance will pay off.

You all make some interesting points. Some of what was said was to "Read and Keep Learning." Since at this point in time I am looking at internet business I think mostly I am looking at "How to write to catch the attention of potential prospects, and convert them to buyers and joiners." Do you have any recommendations of specific things to read and/or learn from?

Thanks,
Hubert

Well Hubert, there's no limitation for reading material, just google the keyword and you'll get thousands of related links there. To be specific you can try article directories and ezines. Also have a look at sample copies (These can also be easily googled).
