Do you trust your doctor?
A woman in England went to see her doctor.
"Dr Joyce Pratt, 44, allegedly told the patient she was possessed by an evil spirit and suggested she visit a priest who could take the problem away."
During the appointment she mentioned she was experiencing pain and bleeding and the doctor told her she had "something moving inside her".
In a statement the patient said: "She grabbed my stomach and said that it was a flabby stomach and that it moves and it wasn't normal.
"She then said that there was black magic inside."
Doctors have such a funny sense of humour :Sarcastic smilie with a stethoscope:

I was reading the book 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' and it was revealed that when the top Nazi Party officials began planning the details of the holocaust with those who would actually carry it out, there were several top german military leaders who protested it-but not one doctor. When i read a different book (Time life WW11 series) about it, they had an illustration section of the concentration camps and the horrific medical experiments. It showed some victims dying of cold and other experiments while doctors looked on unemotioanlly, sometimes smiling and looking like they enjoyed it.
Another thing is I was told by someone who went thru the training to be a doctor is that it is more like an indoctrination, with so many hours of no sleep and a 'no questions asked' and 'assembly line' type attitude that makes it easy to be aloof from the patients and procedures

Very interesting post, primeryder. From what I've heard, many doctors do have to learn how to emotionally distance themselves - and sort of look at people as objects, for lack of a better word. On one hand, that sounds absolutely horrible, but on the other hand, I think, if I were a doctor, I'd have to do anything I could to not feel every shred of pain that my patients (and their families) go through. I'd have to come up with some sort of coping mechanism or I'd die of depression.
Hm, maybe that crazy doc in the article above just snapped due to an overload of emotion?

I'm terrified of doctors, which makes me not want to trust them.
Funny, though - if I had the chance to go back 6 years to the beginning of my freshman year, I'd aim at becoming a doctor.

It's never too late. Do you think you'll regret it if you don't go into medicine?
For inspiration: My own doctor was actually a nurse for 10 years before she went back to school and got her MD - which was her dream since childhood.

I don't like doctors. I like the new one I got though. She is pretty cool. Nevertheless, I still like to stay away from medical facilities unless I have to.

I've had some great doctors. And some lousy ones. If they don't answer questions or tell you "just TAKE the pills!" walk out and find another.
Some of my relatives are doctors. They have lots of horrific stories about their profession. They tell them all with the indifferent emotionless gaze mentioned above. After a while seeing someone in pain must become tantamount to watching the toilet flush. The challenge seems to be turning off the empathy spicket, otherwise the emotions overwhelm like a barbed wire tidal wave.
A doctor I used to see told me "I get sick about three times a month. But pediatricians have it worse; they get sick about six times a month. It's all part of the job." Then he described the medications he took almost constantly to "make it through the day." Suddenly I didn't regret never having considered thinking about ruminating on going to medical school. Not for me. Not me. Nope.

Ah to be young and frizzled again.
Follow your gut instincts. If you were truly meant to be a doc, then the right opportunity at the right time will present itself and you'll know to jump right in.

i've gone to my doctor before and told him how i was feeling and got a real shock. i could see his pc screen and i saw him go onto google and search for my symtoms. i have to say it didn't give me much confidence in the health profession. I could have, and did do that myself before going to see him.
what a joke.... needless to say, i moved practices very shortly afterwards.

....Yes I understand that physicians have to have a certain amount of emotional detachment for those reasons you stated. I was referring more to the overall system which gives the doctors little freedom and encourages a sort of hive mentality. Much like teachers who are forced against their will to stick to the school curriculum, even if they hate the curriculum with a passion, otherwise they are deprived of tenure and other benefits.

I can't say that I trust doctors very much. There are very few among them who are the real specialists.
