Not extraterrestrial, merely very advanced and competent mariners. It is certainly odd that maps which had been copied from BC periods and kept through the ages were of much better quality than, say, C13, 14, 15 maps.
Fingerprints of the Gods talks about the pyramids in great depth too. If you haven't read it, I know you'd love it. Now, the book has many flaws, and Hancock draws many dodgy conclusions. But the materials he draws upon to reach his conclusions are fundamentally sound, not to say extraordinary and eye-opening.
Nazca lines - Daniken theorises that they were landing strips. That's lunacy. The lines are drawn in 9 inches of loose soil. How many landing strips do you know made of a thick covering of loose dusty soil? The wheels would break instantly. And wouldn't aliens have VTOL? But that's Von Daniken for you. Hancock also talks about these things - Titicaca, Nazca lines, Viracocha and so on. His ideas are much more plausible.
Please, if you haven't read it, get it - the things you mention are all covered here and I promise you'll be delighted with it. Aliens aren't needed as an explanation. I'm not discounting anything, just saying that you don't need aliens to explain these things

dear rank,
if you read my posts - i only like the questions daeniken is asking. i never said his answers or theories are worth anything. but i also said, his questions are not answered until today, not by himself, not by hancock, not by any scientists.
hancocks answer for thr piri reis map - well, in my opinion, just another theory, but no answer!
the nazca lines - certainly no landing strip - but for sure something we cant explain.
and the pyramids - well, i dont know if you heard about the experiment, by some swiss architects and scientists. they wanted to build the cheops-pyramide, scaled down to a height of 25 meters, only using technics and tools, which were available at that time. to cut a long story short: at a little bit over 17 meters, the whole thing transformed in a pile of rubble. until today we KNOW almost nothing about the pyramids. we suspect a lot and some things might be close to the truth - but honestly we KNOW nothing!
by the way: i heard about hancock, read some stuff about and from him but never the book you mentioned. will put it on my to do list! thanks!
