This brings to mind the uncertainty principle as characterized by Schrödinger's cat, where the very fact of looking at an experiment changes the outcome. Thus if we put Ed. into a thick, lead lined box and locked the lid, we could not say whether Ed. was in fact actually in the box or not.
Since, when Ed. is in the box his existence is in flux, we cannot determine whether he exists or not at any one time. Therefore in accordance with normal observed phenomena which exists at all times, because Ed.s existence cannot be determined, we have to concluded he is the deranged imaginings of our subconscious need for an Ed. being.
