This one hit a little too close to home... I used to live in the building seen in the background of the picture below. I've driven over that bridge hundreds of times. The thing just fell without warning. Augh!!

Yes, I saw it about ten minutes after I posted this.

Someone I know drove over it at 5pm (as did thousands of others) - it collapsed at 6. Ugh.

It would be interesting to find out about how old the bridge is and whether or not it has been properly maintained over the years.

40 Years shouldn't be too old for a bridge.

I'd want to see maintainence records and I'd also want to know about the design.
Maybe bridge harmonics was a factor.

It was categorized as "structurally unsound" in 2005. So were quite a few bridges in Minnesota, so I hear. This will likely have some interesting repercussions...

All troughout Europe you find bridges that were build by the Roman empire, most of them are still in use. It's not that building bridges to last centuries has yet to be invented.
