I agree with you completely, Julie!

It's not like it's a freaking cell phone! Sheesh!

I must admit, I love living in Japan where I don't have to worry about jackasses with guns. But if I went back to the States, I would buy a gun again. I think it's stupid to assume that nobody will attempt to assault me or my family, when the statistics show it to be so common.

Sure, there are a lot of accidental deaths with guns. Stupid. Perhaps it would be awesome if guns never existed. Or if nobody had guns. That would be beautiful.

But the real cause of violence is never a gun. Never. It's people. If you handed a gun to every Japanese person, and handed a gun to every American person, and waited a year, there would be a huge heap of American people dead, and maybe a couple dozen Japanese dead.

Maybe the focus should be on the cause of the violence, and not a facilitating tool (guns)?
John, it's far too easy to get a gun in this country.

I know. It shouldn't be. Come to think of it, I knew more than a few felons who owned arsenals.

Dumbass country.

I can see it isn't Christy as I think we have pointed out statistics in other threads about how many gun related deaths there are over there.

The problem is that the time it takes to educate people about this, most them would have been shot! - lol!

There definitely seems like there are a lot of nuts over there that walk about with guns, or so your stats show - I will have to dig up that thread with the stats in again.

Bloody terrifies me about coming over!

Wait...want to hear something about guns that Cleveland's dumbass mayor came up with. He wants to make it illegal for anyone under 21 to get a gun, thinking that's going to solve the violence problems in the city. As if! They aren't getting them legally to begin with.

I am the daughter of a Marine. I was taught to stand at attention at the sight of the flag and to trust the government.

My parents now think I'm a liberal.

This is what I love about the Lobby, discussions can turn so quickly to nipples. Never happens in the politics forum.

The guns debate was never what concerned me about the story that started this thread. It was more that gun shop owners really thought that pink guns would increase the number of female gun owners. It beggars belief.

I doubt is as much to create new customers as it is to offer something new to females who buy guns anyway. I my experience most people buy multiple guns...so it's just marketing to your customers.

Sorry, but in areas where guns aren't this "oooooh scaaaary" thing, it's no different than making a set of pink golf clubs. Guns are used as a tool for sport more than anything.

And yeah, I think I could take out at least a few in a cafeteria with a pink golf club before they brought me down.

South: Pink golf clubs, are you mad sir, that's worst then guns.

The article starts with:
"Firearms shops in the US are stocking pink rifles and shotguns to encourage girls to get into shooting."

May be that is just the journalist speaking though. Perhaps you are right, it is more for the already armed women.

BTW, just noticed this line in the article:
"In Baraboo, Jim Astle, owner of Jim's Gun Supply in Baraboo, has been coating guns in pink and other colours for four years. His 12-year-old daughter owns a pink camouflage shotgun."

As a matter of interest to a Brit., could you say at what age it is legal to own a gun in America, or is this governed by state laws?

From Wiki:

Quote:
U.S. policy aims to maintain the right of legitimate users to own most types of firearms, while restricting access to firearms by those individuals in high risk groups. Gun dealers in the United States are prohibited from selling handguns to those under the age of 21, and long guns to those under the age of 18. There are also restrictions on selling guns to out-of-state residents.
In the neighborhood I grew up in most fathers bought their sons a gun of some kind by the time they were 12. Usually a 22 or a 20-gauge shotgun.

Thanks Ed.

So it seems those under the age of 18 are not legally allowed to own a gun, but many have access to fire arms as gifts. I assume any responsible parent would only allow children access to these gifts while being supervised by a responsible adult.
