Happy Thanksgiving!
I guess we must have started killing off the indians about a month before the US.

Yeah. Something that both sides of our border can share some shame in.
But, neither you nor I were alive at the time, so what can we do? Remember it, I guess.
Happy Thanksgiving in any event. Let's be nicer to each other going forward.

Happy thanks giving you Canadians.
But, can someone explain thanks giving to an ignorant Brit please? And why is the Canadian one at a different time to the American's. And what do you Canadians do during this holiday?

Well, Canada's their own country. So they get their own holidays.
I think the point of both is to give thanks, and most importantly, eat like a pig?

SITA: You could ask the same question "why don't Americans have their TG at the same time as Canadians?" Julie's right - just two different countries with different origins.
And turkey here. Well, not here... in Toronto. Really what I miss is the pumpkin pie.

So in America and Canada it is just a date arrived at many years ago totally at random? Or is there some significance behind it?
Many countries have celebrations at the end of harvest times as a way of giving thanks and rejoicing in a time of plenty, is this related? (Mid winter is also one of those festival times, traditionally as a moral booster and a way of remembering the coming of another year.)

Yea, ours is turkey too.... Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, veggies, cranberries, bread/rolls, and pumpkin pie for dessert! I don't pig out, but my parents always try to force feed me more than what I want.

Most holidays originate from pagan rituals, with the obvious exceptions...

In the United States, the holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada, where the harvest generally ends earlier in the year, the holiday is celebrated on the second Monday in October, which is observed as Columbus Day or protested as Indigenous Peoples Day in the United States .
