Do you hate it when other people succeed?
Gore Vidal once said "To succeed in America is not enough... others must fail."
How true do you think this is? When someone you know succeeds do you feel cheated in some way? Or resentful? Or just jealous? Do you define your own ideas of success by the actual success of others?
Ruminate and post, please...

Honestly,I don't think that we should be jealous or envious when other people succeed..Instead,we should be proud and happy for them, so that when it's our turn to be successful..Many will be happy for us.

Of course, we should strive to succeed first so that we can grease up the rungs of the ladder on the way up so as to make it damned tough for others to follow.
There is a downside to this though, one slip and you will slide down faster than goose-s**t slides through a tin horn

I watched a show last night on youtube with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as guests.
At one moment, Steve Jobs said that "Apple to succeed, Microsoft has to fail"...
He said after that that there is no need for this competition and blah blah.. but what I want to say here is that if we (me and that other person) can't be friends (allies) then he should fail so I can succeed. So I'll have no regrets...

I like to watch people succeed as they would want the same for me. However, learning the process of what they did to get there helps out a lot.

The only person I hate to see succeed is Spongebob Squarepants. That fellow has been riding Patrick Star's coattails for entirely too long.

Seeing others succeed aggravates me to the point of inspiration. In a small, dark place in my heart I cuss and swear and get all green and mad. But I soon get over it. I keep a hold of that dark place because it inspires me to work harder, try harder, thinker cleverer and not give up. After all if that shmuck could do it, I'm gonna make darn sure I do too.

it's nice to see one person succeeds or fulfill his goals. i know it's kinda hard to pursue your targeted goal, but if you really want to reach it you have to strive hard for it.

I think if it's your rival then healthy competition is good. It makes you strive to try harder, so that when you finally kick their ass it feels even better.
But I do enjoy it when my friends succeed

My dad would occasionally use the phrase, "you can't argue with success", with a smile similar to this > on his face, to end an argument. In other words, there was nothing else that you could say that would make any difference after that point. I never quite agreed with that philosophy, probably because it has it's root in business.
I sometimes wonder if I'd be happier having died from hypothermia at age 26 by falling through the ice while tending animal traps too far from the cabin.

How we measure success has always intrigued me.
But that is another topic…
My personal success is based on the success of others, so I love to see them do well.
I hate it when evil succeeds though…

If I saw someone succeeded, even it's not me I felt really
happy for them. And that made me think that I must also do my
best to achieved my goals in life.

You're not alone, I think it's a trait that a lot of us share. Jealousy ( just a word for wanting what someone else has) creates progress and competition like nothing else. If people weren't this way, we'd still be living in caves and trees, and there'd be no aeroplanes, computers, civilisation, arms races, pollution, WAR!... or anything modern and as we know it - and what a world it would be.

Now I have become matured enough not to envy the other person who succeeded. It all happens in our life and in fact, the other's success should help you to strive hard so that you too can succeed
