Do you work on your own web projects while you are work?

What types of things do you do and more importantly what is not safe to ever do?

I work for the Government, they do not even give us web access so I can't get to anywhere online other than our Intranet. They do allow us to receive email from the Internet though but thats it. I take my laptop with me to work and have a mobile broadband card in it. So I can get on the Internet when I want through my laptop

I do work on my own sites at work on my lunch break with my laptop.

Yes, I do work on my web projects at work. How? I class and report my hours spend doing it as training on the job, and indeed, it often is.

I don't even have a job that involves webdev (mostly) but scripting is something I do. There have been occasions where I've written PHP script to do batch processing of stuff from the command line, I also have to handle SQL databases here so that mucking about with SQL is of course adding to my knowledge.

Not at all. That's far too risky these days. Such things are easily tracked. Networks can log a person's action down to the keystroke. A few people where I work were escorted out for working on "side projects" during business hours. Those "projects" ranged from day trading to web design.

The only exception would be, as the person above does, to somehow classify it as "training." I have a feeling that the employers wouldn't appreciate it if they knew you were working with outside clients for money, however. It's a rare business that doesn't look down on that. But if you can do it, great.

I must expand on my comment to mention that for me, the training it is officially endorsed and they expect me to be doing the training. The project is not for profit, too.

I only ever work on projects that will help my business to grow in some way while I am at work. I do have a couple personal projects and sites that I have worked on, but they all have been used to promote SEO.com.

actually, that is not recommended in terms of productivity, better to focus on a task at a time and complete 3-4 tasks a day.

I work at home - in home child care - and have a laptop with wireless network that lives on the kitchen counter. I check email as I make breakfast and am online when the kids are napping.

I can't work on my websites while at work because there just isn't any time to do so although I require a laptop for my job.
