Ok, and what do they get from protecting the apostrophe? Will you win an award for that? Does someone gets in jail by mis-using?

Can't get it.

I read once that correct punctuation and grammar are a courtesy to the reader. It helps them understand more precisely what it is you intended to say, instead of having to guess.

It demands more of the writer that is for sure! There are only a handful of people on this forum that I would consider courteous enough.

I never understood why people struggle so much with apostrophes, they're easy.

If English is your second language I understand it would be harder to grasp, but for people who learn it as their first language, the it's/its thing is silly...

Why must there be so many rules anyhow?

because people are too lazy to write "it is" or "do not"

if they weren't so lazy, we wouldn't need the rules

I think it is to more accurately reflect contractions in speech. People do not say, "people do not say", they generally say "people don't say" when actually talking. The 'o' in the 'not' is generally left out. If written it would be 'dont'. The apostrophe is to let you know that the 'o' was omitted and thus it becomes 'don't'.

Now, what the hell are quotation marks for?

they represent that thing people do where they hold up their hands and bend the index and middle fingers, like Dr Evil when he says "laser"

hm.. for some reason, I beg to disagree Chris.

There were people, (English as 2nd language) uses right grammar more than those people (English as main language) do. Can't provide a report/statistics but I just noticed.

And it's indeed silly.

when i checked out the site and the examples of apostrophe abuse, most were "it's"

i began to notice that common error even years ago..and up to now, sadly..
