How Much Is Your Virginity Worth?
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsO...12411420080911
Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 22-year-old woman in the United States is publicly auctioning her virginity to pay for her college education, sparking a heated online debate about sex and morality.
The student from San Diego, California, who is using the pseudonym Natalie Dylan for "safety reasons," said she had no moral dilemma with her decision and found it "empowering".

Some would say the ability to recognize a joke is another virtue.

Prostitution is supposedly the oldest profession. Then again surely she could have found a better way to finance her education. Logically I see nothing wrong, its her body to do with as she wishes, if she chooses to sell it, well, that's capitalism after all. But on an emotional level this is capitalism gone mad, are there no limits any more.
What ever happened to working?

Nothing wrong with that, though as someone who spent *many* years working while in school - with a few years on fellowship not working while in school - I can tell you it is definitely harder to do the former. Statistically, working while pursuing higher education takes longer and lowers your odds of completing a degree (at the undergraduate level anyway; I understand that this young lady is going to grad school).
That said, it's not a choice I'd consider the best in the world, but she appears to have weighed her options and decided this is an acceptable way to go.

I guess I was lucky to have done my degree at a time when I didn't have to pay, the government footed the bill. The theory being of course that as a graduate I would pay more in tax and thus balance the cost. And as a graduate I would bring more to society as a whole.
Now of course students in the UK take loans out at preferential rates and have to pay the money back once they are working. I know working impacts on study in very real ways. I don't deny her the right to choose this path. I would hope that in her position I would find a different solution, but its her life and who am I to criticize. But what kind of a world does it lead to.
Blood one day, nothing wrong there.
Sperm, nothing wrong there.
Egg donations, surrogate mothers.
Virginity for the highest bidder, hmmm...
An organ to feed a hungry family.
Sure liberty and freedom on the one hand, but is it a world that inspires me, a world that sits comfortably around me, no.

Heck, the world hasn't inspired me for years. Why do you think I came up with my own?

I might follow your lead there and create my own, but I've got a feeling it might end up being just as scary as the real one.

Question; Is there any way of checking out if the goods are what's advertised before placing a bid? Another question; when not satisfied with the purchase can one get their money back?

She will be checked by a doctor before hand to verify "authenticity".
There are no refunds, so make it good.
