What's the biggest mistake you've made as an admin?

This should be a pretty interesting topic! As a forum admin, what is the biggest mistake you ever made?

I've seen administrators that pile on forums upon forums and expect them to magically fill up. Then when the forums don't, they whine and complain.

The biggest mistake I have ever seen is when admins close forums because there is not enough people joining or not enough posts being made. How does that make any since? This is how they think: Well... I want more members and posts... oh I have an idea... I will just close the forum that way more people will join and post!

LOL! My answer was definitely tongue in cheek. When it comes down to it, trial and error is a huge learning factor in running a community.

Trusting a friend whom I met online to not be a greedy pig. He quite literally robbed from one of my most supportive members, lied about it and refused to take responsibility for the damage he caused. It actually thrust my forum into a downward spiral that literally took me a few years to rebound from; not to mention the damage it caused to my reputation.

I no longer make friends staff unless they show a higher level of site dedication than my regular members.

I'll assume you mean *besides* becoming an admin.

Failing to ban when it was the best choice. More often see people err the other way. Somewhere between lies sane practice. That role and doing it correctly are the same... Moderate. Took a while to figure that out.

Allowing new members to post without approving the membership request.

My mistake was selling my popular forum last year that i invested lot's of money on but i had to for the money. (Family problems last year and needed money - usa economy effected family) Now the forum is a big spam forum cause the mod team suck's but my hands wiped clean from that forum so i will not contact owner.

Someday i'll get back into running a forum, i know the proper way to set one up and who to go to for theme design/coding/SEO stuff. For now i just post on them. lol

A very similar situation occurred with me a couple years ago. However, I sold my forum hosting company and you will never guess what they buyer did with it: he turned it into a tire selling website!

If I did that it'd be considered a feature instead of a glitch.

I think we are set up in a manner that keeps us from accidental banning ourselves or I am sure I would have done it by now.

I actually thought that is was possible to ban yourself in vBulletin unless you have founder status.

Attempting a little too hard to keep out spammers. I made it so hard to sign up that no spammer got through, but neither did most of the could be members.

I've found a friendly medium now though...

I am working on some pretty advanced captchas at the moment. They will be extremely easy for members to solve but near impossible for any type of bot.

They are kind of like puzzles

On a forum-community-affiliate hybrid that I helped build for a client I screwed up big time when setting up a cron, and made the system give away money to the members for the whole night. The next morning I thought my client would have a heart attack.

you know what they say, surprised users are happy users
