Vbulletin 4.0: Anyone Excited?
Just like the title says, is anyone excited about the release of Vbulletin 4.0? I sure am, it looks pretty sweet. Vbulletin actually has a nice cms/blog feature on the frontpage. This could mean a lot of expandability!
Take a look down below. You're able to write articles and for users to comment on them. So you really don't have to worry about bridging Joomla or Wordpress to Vbulletin anymore. That's if you ever did that...
I think this will make it easier to start a thriving community.
Plus I hear all the urls will be SEO optimized, only downfall is the price.

I think that the idea of making their forum software into a cms software is great. The only thing I really have against is the fact that they raised their prices. I don't personally have a vBulletin license since I sold it awhile back. However, I think that all of their current customers should not have to pay to upgrade to their new CMS.

I'm still at a toss up on whether to pay for the new license or not. If VB did not change the priceing structure the license that i have now will expire Jan. 2010 but now that's a waste. I still have to purchase the new license they have to get V4.
Since i have not owned a forum in almost 2 years and not really to motivated to start another i may let the license expire. (This was a leased license)
The new VB4 looks great though. With all the new features, will this be using a lot of server resources? Would the forum owners on shared hosting be in danger of running out of space?

I also wonder how compatible our current templates will be with the new CMS feature.

It has been stated on their forums that old themes and plugins will not work with this version, however maybe when they release it someone will create an updater.
Apparently the new way styles work, it is very easy to make adjustments.
But no one really knows anything until they release the beta.

The real question is how long will it take for all the mods and themes to be re-written for V4.

Bummer, I was hoping they would work. I hope it doesn't take long for the theme companies to start converting them to 4.0. Probably be 3-6 months to start seeing a lot of really cool themes.

I am sure you could just pay someone a small amount and they could convert your current theme. I did that for my phpBB2 theme when phpBB3 came out.

I am really beating myself up over what to do with the 4.0 situation, do I stay where I am or do I upgrade? What is there now I bought, it would be nice to enhance it into my own creation and get it going again...A new theme would be nice too, just don't like the price tags out there for the custom ones and don't have the time to spend on doing one myself...I really need to stop working on so many different things at the same time perhaps....

If switching to 4 series means less template updating, then I'm all over it. I don't mind software updating at all but fixing templates (especially multiple templates) sucks.

In all honesty the best thing you can do is actually take vB's default theme and alter it to your liking. You can do a lot by simply altering the .css in vB's ACP and by changing images, colors and backgrounds.
I wouldn't even worry about w3c compatibility as much as everyone says because while it may impact your site at some level it won't be enough to damage your SERP ranking. My current theme is a mess according to w3c yet my forum url's do quite nicely. The most important part is that your template is as cross browser compatible as possible.
This will also help you develop your skills in .html and thats just a good skill to have when your a webmaster IMHO.

Silly question. But how much is a license to Vbulletin 4.0 for someone who has never used it?
