How can i start simple machine forum(SMF).

I have come across some simple machine forum(SMF).How can i start one for my website.Is it free or paid?

I've seen alot of those free forums.. they usually use for a small groups and organization.. not sure but maybe its worth a try..

I would suggest you go with vbulletin 4.0. Its definetly worth it.

go ahead its free. and there are lots of mods and plugins for this opensource script just like wordpress. so whatever plugin you need is always there. you might also want to integrate your smf to your wordpress blog, i think there is a tutorials for this.

or just use a wordpress forum plugin instead

SMF is very good and is free. There is a decent sized community providing support and plugins, but personally I would go down the phpbb route for a free forum.

phpbb is free as our the plugins/mods and templates (well, almost all are).

If you have used SMF then phpbb can be a bit scary initially because it seems like there is so much more to it in the admin panel, but after literally 5 minutes you will be very comfortable. It really is worth the time looking at it, reading and startup guides on their site, etc. because I truly believe it is the best free option.

Also, if your webhost provides fantastico then you should be able to install phpbb through there which makes things a little easier.
