phpBB is the best available for free, with vB obviously being the best paid.

Agreed phpbb is very brandable as well. Dont need to be super-experienced to design a good theme.

I like discuz best, really very powerful forum software. but it's in Chinese. I got an english version but not very satisfied with the translation. I hope some one here can help me to correct the translation. I would like to share this forum for exchange. If you are interested please visit my website at 12340000.com to view.

SMF all the way. PHPbb and myBB get hacked too easily.

phpbb and myBB are very good free forum softwares. phpbb can be used for huge communities too but myBB is suitable for small or average communities. I mean if you think your forum will have millions of posts, phpbb can handle them better than myBB.

As someone mentioned earlier, if you are using Joomla, Kunena is very very nice. It is open source and they are always adding new features and you can help suggest things right on their forums!

So on what basis is this comment made? A fact? A hunch or a guess?

I would love to see some sort of link to a Reputable article that compares stats and proves this claim cause i think its either totally wrong, or at best its hearsay.

I am trying Vanilla Forums now, and I am positive to what you can do to customize it. You can really make it fit into any web design.

Buddypress from the wordpress family is a powerful and flexible system.
One of the provblems with some of the older forum applications is they are very "tech" looking - and if the forum is for It or web people its ok - but for the newer generation and "typical web users" you need to look at asthetics as well

For me the best free software for making forums is phpbb3. But I suggest to start considering to buy vbulletin, the export of data from phpbb to vbulletin is a nightmare.

I gotta go with Drupal on this one. It's forum functions are included in the base module. You will of course have other mods and add ons. But for a solid stable forum and user management, you won't do better.

Well i have a VB license sitting unused whilst i operate 2 forums on MyBB.

I do this because i am far more confident in MyBB and the ability to get customer support. The forum software is great, the support forum always provide prompt and efficient assistance and after the absolutely shocking release of Vb4 and all its problems........well it simply dosent generate a lot of faith in their product.

I am sure people will debate and disagree......but each to their own
