SMF IMHO is great as a free forum software because it is easier to use.
phpBB has too many clicks to get anywhere and setting it up so people can actually post is a headache in it's self.
I have never got past the demo stage with any others tbh as I tried SMF first on someone's advice some 8 years ago and recently tried phpBB for the first time (installed that is) and absolutely hated it.
I deleted a phpBB forum last week and replaced it with SMF.
I also own a VB 3.7 and a VB 4 license to and I find SMF admin backend similarly set up in regards to navigating around it. phpBB just didn't have enough options for me and my needs.
I am going to be using SMF on what will be dozens of forums over the coming months and years and I seriously would not be contemplating such a move if I didn't think SMF was the best free software for the job.
Nobody will convince me that phpBB or any other free forum software really comes close to SMF and as I said I have tried them all in demo mode and recently to.
I have been using VB for a few years now and tbh brutally honest SMF is the only one I would entertain as a free alternative.
It even has one thing a raw VB does not have
Wap enabled handheld friendly built in jeez VB does not have that as standard as far as i am aware (though I believe invision pb does).
That alone puts SMF in a different league to the other free forums that one can self host. I have no clue about hosted free software's as that's not even the same subject to me.
