What made you start a forum?
I was just thinking about what makes people start forums? For me, I've always been an active member of several forums, in probably 5-10 different niches. I enjoy reading about a lot of things and have had sites for a few years. I've recently scaled back what I own to try and develop a couple of forums in niches I enjoy...is this similar for everyone else or..?

I like forums and I like golf and I thought it would be cool to meet other people who golf in my area, so I started a local golf forum.

Well if you start one to make money, you are probably doomed to failure because without doubt, to succeed in any way is a huge job and that means lots of time and lots of passion.

Always been a forum user and felt in adding one to my site i could talk to the users and give them a place to share things. Adds to my site and the community.

There is only so much you can discuss on a blog. And having discussions in comments isn't the best way to do it.
Another reason to add a forum is to attract new visitors. Visitors you would have missed out on if you hadn't had a forum. If you take care of your forum and it has a constant growth, no matter how fast or slow, you'll get more and more visitors.

Very true. I like having my content up there and know it's of use for people. But I want to keep adding to it. To be able to do that regularly, it does need to make money, but for now, it's just a hobby

Theres nothing i look forward to more than logging in and seeing a good conversation happening. Knowing the community is enjoying a chin wag is very pleasing.
There is no other platform that can achieve this.

So what made you start a forum anyways?
If you want a website review of your forum then create a thread in the website review section.

Created a forum for my old Counter Strike Clan. When the clan disbanded, I kept the forum and turned it into a more general gaming forum. Just turned 5 years old
So Counter Strike made me start a forum, and the love of gaming has kept me at it.

I heard a lot of people do it for the industry they work in to get new clients (although that's going to be pretty long term). So an SEO specialist would launch a niche SEO forum for instance.

I started a forum because I love talking to people especially if I love the topic.
