Do you allow affiliate links?

This has nothing to do with our policy here at v7n but I am curious if you allow referral or affiliate links on your forums. Please explain your reasoning.

If you want to address the same topic for other social media sites feel free to do so.

On the 2-3 forums I've started and tried to get going, I've never allowed referral/affiliate links. This is due to the fact most of the time people don't offer a non-referral/non-affiliate link and I honestly find that quite disrespectful.

I also find that forums that allow such links usually attract a lot of affiliate/referral link spammers.

I reviewed a few that do after I posted this and I 100% agree with you. I'm suppose that 1 of 1000 posted might offer some value to a site but that ROI is way too small to make cleaning up the crap worth the effort.

Indeed. If I were to ever run a forum and actually allow such links, I'd have a specific forum where only they would be allowed and I'd probably have some sort of post/moderation restriction to weed out the spammers.

On forums that I have run I have always allowed affiliate links and I feel that it has helped me in the long run and have always believed it's a good way of building backlinks to relevant websites, blogs and forums. We at first had the problem of spammers coming in trying to spam their way on the forum but once we had things set up we were able to weed out the spammers and be left with genuine affiliate links.

I don't allow it. I did with a forum long time ago, and the only users I ever got, was bots or manual affiliate linkspammer. That really got on my nerves, so no more of that for me.

I see some forums are too strict to affiliate links and they don't allow, I also have a forum on phpbb software, but I don't check the signature of my forum members as I need members, contents in my forum so I don't ban those who are using affiliate links in their signature, but I moderate my blog heavily..

You can have members and keep a signature policy. Also, if people are using referral links in their post, just edit it away to a clean link. You can risk, when ignoring signatures, that you get an outbound link to a really bad website, and that can harm your site.
