Have you tried asking for support on there support forum? I'm sure this question has came up on there official support forum or they have a tutorial on there homepage.

It should be an edit in the template footer file. That may be in the theme section.

Find a phrase that is in the footer, copy and paste that to notepad, open anything that looks like the footer file and search the phrase. Do keep in mind that some of the scripts use a language file which is then plugged into the footer template.

And now just a personal opinion. Adding to is fine. Removing their by or link when using free software isn't really playing fair in my mind.

Just to put this out in the open for the thread creator and other viewer's, read this message below:

No. You cannot alter, remove, or hide the copyright tag at the bottom of any SMF forum in any way, with the exception of having written permission from Simple Machines.

Also, you are not allowed to alter or remove any credit information from the SMF source code. You cannot copy any part of the SMF source code, or claim any SMF code is yours.

Please read The Simple Machines License for further information.

If you have inadvertently gotten an error where the SMF copyright is supposed to be, see Why am I getting a message saying the copyright is missing? for some possible solutions and causes for this error message.

People create themes and add there URL in the footer. Like there rules state, you need written permission to remove the copyright

EDIT: V7N still has vBulletin copyright in the footer. We proud to show the forum software we using.

Even before Snakeair took the time to look it up I mentioned that I thought it was wrong. I guess the most polite way to say it is do you want to be a scoundrel and cheat or a person of character? Lots of people break the rules and law. Does that make it right? Do you want a lot of money? Would you steal it if you got the chance?

The groups who make open source scripts available for use spend a lot of time and effort on them for no pay. They deserve the credit and the link.

Without knowing exactly what you wanted to do I answered your initial question about the how because it was a valid coding related question not because I wanted to help you be a cheat.

Actually, that is only PARTIALLY correct now. For any SMF 1.x version, that is true.

Starting with SMF 2.0.3, you're allowed to remove the copyright, HOWEVER, most of the team members will refuse to provide any support if you remove the SMF copyright. Same with most of the regular members that provide support.

That being said, to the Op, go into the Themes folder, locate the theme you want, download/open index.template.php and look for "function template_body_below()".

Anything beyond that I will not help you with.
