For me it's XenForo, it feels very social and interactive.

also XF uses lot less resources than VB and in general looks better, add-ons rich..

I really like talking on XenForo as it has a very interactive feel. Vanilla is also pretty good, but it is for a different type of forum (more social, less related).

vBulletin still feels very formal to me.

PhpBB- in my opinion.
The main reason it's the most popular is It works and it's free

I have used phpbb and vbulletin in the past. If you're looking for inbuilt feature vbulletin has most of them, and rest comes from the products & plugins available free or purchased through vbulletin.org. However, vbulletin comes at a decent price and if you're on a low budget you might find vbulletin expensive.
phpbb on the other hand is free. It's packed with most of the features that you really require for a forum. However, I find a few things little daunting with phpbb. For example, creating lengthy posts with a lot of things used without a WYSIWYG editor tend to get boring after sometime. Also, installing Mods was also not a good experience because most times AutoMod didn't make the changes perfectly (because of other modifications/themes or difference in versions).
So, if you can afford then its vbulletin. if cannot then phpbb.
[PS: Haven't used phpbb for a long time, so might not be updated with its current features]

The most famous are vbulletin, myphpbb and smf. Smf itīs very easy to use, to install plugins is only upload and press the buttom, but you have less plugins in the market. Myphpbb has more plugins, you can cunstomize more things but for installing plugins you have to change some lines of code in some pages. You have instructions but it more difficult. Vbulleting is not free, but a lo of important forums use vbulletin, so i think that itīs a very good sftware, but i never tried it.

vBulletin 3 is very simple and very straight forward. I've *never* had problems with creating add-ons/plugins.

XenForo is beautiful piece of software. However, when I went to develop some add-ons/plugins, there was little to no documentation. This was over a year ago, so it may have changed, but that was my biggest problem with it at the time.

Vbulletin is great for advanced users. phpbb and mybb are great for intermediate class users. Vbulletin and mybb provides better url structure other than phpbb, for example: site.com/my-forum-post-exists-here opposed to site.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&p=23#p23

The structure I provided as an example to you still exists to this day, and no one has been able to complete an extension that will make this more SEO friendly not just for people but for spiders who crawl our sites. After using phpbb for over a month in my forum (notice link in signature here) I have been able to get my posts and forums indexed within a few hours in Google.

This is based on your htaccess, robots.txt and how you manage your server and cookie settings of how information is seen and indexed by search engines. In all honesty, there is no such thing as "The Best Forum Software". It is based on what you want, what you plan on using it for and doing with it.

This is a users opinion topic so it's really suggested upon who is sharing the information with you on their experience.

I would vouch for MyBB, easy to install and manage.

On the other hand I found phpBB relatively hard to manage.
