Which is the best forum software ?

Hi guys. I've been looking to start a forum and I'm stuck with deciding the forum software. I know this forum are using vBulletin and it's pretty good but I just want to know if it's vbulletin is easy to setup, but if you have a suggestion on other forum software just post.

phpbb is decent and it's free - I've used it for many years - but I feel like it is falling behind the times. Things that I feel should be included by default require a hack or mod. One example that drives me batty - members have to check DST in their profile at the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, then go back and uncheck it in the fall. This should just synch to the user's computer time.

I have been looking long and hard at vbulletin - it's not free but a lot of sites use it now and a lot of people say it's very easy to setup and administer.

Why do you like vBulletin so much? Have you started a forum using this software from scratch?

I'd recommend vB's competitor which is a much better forum software and created by the former creators of vbulletin.

http://xenforo.com/

It's expensive but a very good forum software that has excellent support. I've lurked around there since there beta version was out. I have not started a forum since 2006 but if I'd start one again, that's the software I'd choose.

Hi Snakeair,

This is my first time to see this forum software, I'll check it out and read some feedback too, I'll add it to my option.

If you're just beginning, you should start with a free software, like SMF, VB etc, and see if it`s worth it investing in a decent hosting and premium software. Or if you got enough money to invest, go with Vbulleting and invest in marketing it.

Just because it's free it does not mean it's the best. What is your experience in running a PHPBB forum?

There is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that goes on for forum admins that members do not know about. The more features the admin has, the better the forum is.

PHP BB has other alternatives like SMF and MyBB.
MyBB is a very good option actually with really nice themes and plugins almost like vB itself.

I never used PHPBB nor any other besides Simple Machines Forum.

As such, I'd recommend SMF if you want full support and tons of plugins.
You'll rarely encounter any problems with it plus the amount of themes available (free and premium) is through the roof.

It's solid and reliable, heavily customizable: you can use Facebook logins, custom downloading systems, ad management to place ads just as you can see here on V7N, social media buttons (premium themes only), portals, Sitemaps... and the list goes on.

Basically, SMF is to Forums what WordPress is to Blogs. Speaking of which.. there really isn't anything you can do in WP that you can't on SMF.

Premium themes are also much cheaper.

It's also open source, which is good if you're a developer.

Personally, I don't think any other is worth trying, except vBulletin of course, which also has good reviews.

All in all, with SMF you'll never have any trouble on the long run.

It's amazing that I actually got this delivered to my inbox.

As I previously stated, currently I use SMF but I wanted to read what others had to say, so I subscribed. But doesn't make any sence posting a reply if you don't even know what to say.

I used vBulletin for a while, but if I ever start another forum it will be powered by Xenforo. Xenforo is much cleaner and more modern looking, and the support team is way better than vBulletin's.

I loved vBulletin for years, but they're starting to fall behind the times.

SMF is super easy to use, even for a non-technical person. You can install SMF on your host space via Softaculous.

SMF has a lot of plug ins to choose from, easily installed via the package installer with a one click process.

Lots of customization options for how your forum looks as well as behind the scenes things such as moderator and admin powers.

If you're looking for a free forum software, give SMF a try.

If you have money to burn, try Xenforo. Very easy install process.

Why is vBulletin the best forum CMS? You need to add some details to your replies.

Actually, I'm not a big fan of vBulletin as most times, I lag hard when I go to a site that uses the software. I don't lag on this site and I know they use vBulletin, so maybe it's just dependent on which version is being used. I had heard that newer updates of vBulletin are more lag intensive. So I would not say that vBulletin is the best. There are others, like Xenforo. Always a pleasant experience to be an a forum using Xenforo.
