I can't tell if that advertisement in your footer is Google AdSense or not. Ads on forums all the way in the footer you know at the very bottom doesn't really convert to much. I used to run a forum years ago and I know it didn't make me any money when I was experimenting with ad locations.

Put Google AdSense ad in the header of the forum just like V7N has done. If fact where you have those recent topic's blocks, that's the perfect spot to put AdSense in but make sure that AdSense ad shows on every single page on your forum when people are surfing around your forum.

The side column is also a way to earn some money. Try to gain more room in the side column and create for 125x125 blocks and start selling those blocks to your members, visitors or anyone who wishes to advertise there website on your forum. Set up a monthly fee for these ads and remove them if the customer does not renew there subscription for the next month.

If you have a lot of traffic, I'm sure someday someone will buy a block.

Have you tried AdSense? Try getting an account with adsense and place ads on your forum, you will earn good money if you really get unique visitors.
Or apply for buysellads there you can offer your ad space to advertisers.
Or try bidvertiser and infolinks.

That's correct. If you have good traffic then even a single ad in the header can cover your costs easily.

Looking at the thread creators forum, what would you recommend and where to promote it on the forum.

Need more details to share with the thread creator, I'm sure he isn't a mind reader.

Ads that are placed on the sidebar are recommended for forums and blogs. You can also monetize the page by inserting affiliate links; this method is also ideal since it does not interfere with user experience.
