You buy forum software and upload it to your web hosting account and install the software by following that forums detailed instructions. All forum software have instructions how to install it or you pay a little extra and there staff installs it. Then you just have to login, edit settings, create categories and promote it.

I love this forum software.

https://xenforo.com/

Look at there support section in which has instructions for installing it.

You can go for vBulletin if you want to go for Premium forum script else for free MyBB is best used both of them.

vBulletin is easier to manage from your admin page and Xenforo is better for security.

I am using both XF and VB but prefer vB.

Just my 0.2 cents!

Do you use cpanel? If yes, it's very easy to create forum using installer like fantastico. You can choose one forum software you like, click and done..

not phpBB or SMF

I switched from phpBB to using MyBB - phpBB uses deprecated elements and will not work with PHP versions 5.6 and 7 (as of a few weeks ago when my web host stopped support for PHP 5.5 and broke the forum and left me with a choice of changing forum software or paying for legacy support).

phpBB uses the no longer supported /e with preg_replace() - and instead of a simple drop the e on a line in one file was going to be a chase involving multiple files.

SMF uses mysql_connect instead of mysqli_connect and will not even recognize database support in PHP 7.

Really?

* you must buy a domain. wrong - is like saying paint the car when question involved the transmission - not needed to have a forum exist - helps people find it
* Must buy hosting. How was this comment needed ? Now we have must buy a car and paint it

Will address the final part of the quoted section outside the quotes------

In a previous reply I mentioned 3 bbs systems (only 1 of them worked in PHP versions 5.6 and above) - and I installed and tested them the same way.

For localhost and web - setup database, modify one file in the scripts with the variables for that database, upload or copy the files, set permissions, and run the setup file in a browser.

For localhost I use PHPmyAdmin to create the database. For my webhost I use the C-panel to create the database.

For the MyBB script ( https://mybb.com/ ) - the one of those 3 previously mentioned free scripts that works in PHP 7 - the file is the /inc/config.php file

$config['database']['type'] = 'mysqli';
$config['database']['database'] = 'xxxxxxxxxxxx';
$config['database']['table_prefix'] = 'mybb_';

$config['database']['hostname'] = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx';
$config['database']['username'] = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxx';
$config['database']['password'] = 'xxxxxxxxxxx';

and those xxx's are the variable values to modify for the database you created

next is put the files online (upload) or copy to desired folder (localhost)
if you need an FTP program a good free one is at https://filezilla-project.org/

see https://docs.mybb.com/1.8/install/

Things like bandwidth advice, etc. is outside my interests (just a retired used to do freelance back-end web development a decade ago person here) but this pretty well covers installation.

Do not forget to clean up and paint the car after doing the transmission work - it sells better when pretty

Did you not read the final line of my post?
Nothing wrong, pretty much an essential thing, just not related to setting up the database. Along with selecting proper hosting package is part of entire website "car" but not part of forum "transmission" assembly (keeping the car analogy).

Same as answering "how do I put a good logo on my site" with "first buy a domain name and hosting" when you put that as the beginning of your response to the actual question.

Choice of BBS scripting? I always prefer free to have to buy it for scripting I do not write myself. This is a matter of individual choice, but in general is a good idea to see what is available open source before shelling out money.

Some prices from the http://www.vbulletin.com/en/purchases/ page on that site:

This looks like a rather sketchy note about installing it but only if you have your hosting with them. Any info for installing that bbs systen on some other web host?

I think all this covers the basics, but when it comes to getting traffic, you're going to have a bit more difficulty!

Here's what I suggest. For starters, create a sense of community around a single topic that people have strong feelings about. Once you know what that is, these are my tips, based on a forum I have with over 100k posts:

1) Lots of unique content

2) Get your friends to come post as often as possible for a few weeks, to really pump up the variety and depth of content

3) Be consistent. Don't post a lot one day then not at all for two days. Your users will expect regularity or they won't come back

4) Enjoy yourself! If you aren't having fun on your forum, then no one else will be either.
