Why have forums died?

I was having a look around at the Alexa data for large forums in many different industries and have saw a massive decline.

Some of the time I understand the conversation may be taken to social media however websites like V7N, should only have kept growing.

What happen?

Shiny new object syndrome? a.k.a. social media

Impatient people wanting instant answers and seem to think social media is a quicker place to get their answer?

Also spam. Most forums have failed to control it. Very difficult to clean up once a forum gets spammy. It stops attracting good users, further hastening its demise.

Reddit is another big contributor to forums declining in activity. Personally, I don't quite understand it either. You can't get the same kind of interaction through Reddit and social media that you can get on forums.

Rise of Forums was quick as there was no other option to connect with completely strangers, share and learn things. Rise of Yahoo messenger was due to the same reason.
Rise of social media killed the both as you got the ability to connect with known people and strangers at a same time.

Social media specially FB and twitter killed forums literally as both the platforms gave the individuals to share whatever they wish to share without any moderation. Those whole world become part of it (not literally). Major things which one would seeking for forums would be satisfied on individual FB profiles and groups. What used to happen at yahoo messanger or gtalk + forums is now happening on FB along with more other features. When you get everything at one place, you won't run from here to there. Also, to be honest, most the topics discussed and answers given on most the forums are not that satisfactory and problem solving all the time. (I am not talking abt this forum)

All pointed out to social media, definitely a major reason why Forums are dead but also Question and Answers sites like Quora, Yahoo Answers also contribute to reasons why people are opting less for forums. Earlier, for any help, people used forums, but now Q/A answers and social media are used.

@vaguar: Yes, many Forums are unable to keep SPAM away.

Ya, I don't agree. Sorry, but I don't see the reason pointing to q&a sites or even Social Media being main factors in the decline of high-level forum discussions. SM existed 7-10 years ago at the same time as highly experienced designers and SEOs hung around forums talking business, strategies, testing this and that along with lots of other discussions related to all things online.

When valuable members arrive here of late, and discover the spam and junk, they just leave. Those long-standing members that hung around here posting and replying etc, just left the forum over time because of the spam and junk.

Now, we find forums like this one being swarmed by "paid posters" trying to get their member signatures enabled so they can report back to the suckers they've conned into paying them, advising that they are building links successfully for them.

As a Mod or Admin, when you then take the stance to aggressively remove the junk, fewer of the spammers hang around. And, IMO, since the junk posters are not likely to spend money by clicking thru the banner adverts and buying anything, nothing is lost, except the junk.

Other than the already mentioned points (which could definitely be possible reasons), I personally feel like forums don't look as modern and attractive as social media does. Social media is just easier to use and easier to get quick results/responses from. To be honest, when I first discovered forums and decided to register to v7n, I almost didn't because of how the site looks. It doesn't look modern and appealing like social media apps do. Social media apps keep updating their appearance and controls and I don't see that in these forums. Look at the emojis - they look like the ones we used in Yahoo Messenger.
It doesn't make you feel like it would be useful because it looks aged, if that makes any sense. I know forums aren't supposed to look like a great well-designed website because that's not the purpose, but it still kind of makes sense right?
Of course, I'm not saying that this is the main reason and people who know how to use forums properly will know better than to judge off of the appearance of the site but for newcomers and those used to posting on instagram and getting likes and comments within a few seconds won't necessarily be as inclined to post on forums.
