You might want to check out Left4Dead 2. The multiplayer option is awesome and enjoy hours of killing evil zombies! Up to 4 players.

For me it's any sports game, I don't care what it is. For non PC stuff it has to be WOW.
Not a big fan of the standard shoot em ups.

What do you mean by "offline games"? if you are asking for multiplayer games that are offline I guess you mean LAN games?
Also you will have troubles playing any new game with that machine since it's quite old. Some lightweight good games that support LAN are:
Shooters: Quake 3, Counter Strike, Halo, Battlefield 1942, Team Fortress, Alien Vs Predator 2.
Strategy: Empire Earth 2, Civilization 4, Medieval 2 Total War, Age of Empires,
Sports: FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, NBA Live
If you ever decide to upgrade that computer, get some of these games: Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Far Cry 2.
Their multiplayer components are a blast.

A pentium 4 with 256 megs of memory is not going to run the new Source engine very well. My daughter has a pentium 4 with 1.5 gigs of memory and it runs the original left 4 dead pretty good. But left 4 dead 2 is a lot more graphics intense. 256 megs of memory is barely enough to run windows xp, much less any games. First thing to do is upgrade the memory to at least 1 gig, and then go from there.
If the system will run it, I recommend left 4 dead 2. Its one of the hottest multiplayer video games going right now.
Besides l4d2, take a look at borderlands - that is one awesome game.
Bioshock 2 just came out. But your probably going to need a dual core computer to run that game smoothly.

It depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm pissed I'll go for a shootem up like Halo but if I'm in a better mood I prefer a sports came like Fifa.

If you're into old school gaming then do a search for Zdaemon. It's a DOOM 2 client that allows you to play custom maps with players all over the world with a big community. You can also play CTF, save demos, and chat with players in IRC.

Well back in my college days, after finishing our classes we used to play a lot of counterstrike in our computer lab. It was one of the most exciting multiplayer game for me.

The best multiplayer games are MMOs, well at least from the point of view of the online masses))
like playing CS with my friends once in a while.

I have to disagree - and I'am one of those "online masses". I can not justify paying a monthly fee to play a game.
I have been gaming online since around 1996 - 1997, and I have never paid for anything but the game and my internet connection.

I would say, try playing Delta Force Black Hawk Down, Left 4 Dead. Great games.
Thanks.
