Turn-Based Strategy Games

Greetings...

After the announcement yesterday regarding the future release of Civ V, I got to thinking about how many turn based strategy games I've played...
  • Civ I, II, III, IV
  • Alpha Centauri & Alien Crossfire
  • Call To Power, Call To Power II
  • Colonization (Original and Re-release)
  • Space Empires III, IV, V
  • Galactic Civilizations II
  • Heroes Of Might and Magic III, IV, V
  • Master Of Orion II, III
  • Age of Wonders & Shadow Magic Exp
  • The Battle for Wesnoth (Linux)
  • Free-Civ I, II (Linux)

I think this list completes any that are worth playing.

Any others out there I'm unaware of? (Not that I have time to play, but still curious nonetheless.)

Gotta admit that I preferred MOO 1 over the other two.

Check out the Total War series.

These games are hybrids, the main campaign map is in turn based strategy mode:

And when your units engage enemy it zooms into the terrain and becomes a RTS:

After the battle ends you come back to turn based. The main idea is that the whole game is turn-based but you actually get a chance to fight your own battles instead of leaving them to a statistical calculation like Civ does. Though you can just hit auto resolve in every battle and just play turn-based.

I've been playing Empire Total War (XVIII century themed) and next week they will release a new one called Napoleon Total War. There are also some interesting older versions: Medieval II Total War, Rome Total War...

I tried the demo but ran very sluggish on my machine. Looked rather good though.

Hope to be building a power system in the next couple months. Maybe after that. (Gonna need it for Civ V anyway.)

If you love these sort of games then you should definitely check out the total war series! They have just released Napoleon Total War so you should check that out. Although the system req's are very high to play at ultra for everything, so investing in a new machine could be a very good thing to do right now.

Heres a few links you might like

I tried the first Total War (I forget which one that was. Europe?) and really liked the large scale map but had issues when coming down to the battles. Just couldn't interact with them that well.

I'm a Total War addict. I've heard that they're making the Napoleon series! I can't wait! Empire Total War rocks!

I don't know why but Colonization has a very special place for me amonst others. I am talking about the first one, I didn't like Civ 4 version as much. I still sometimes play it just for nostalgia. That's definitely my favorite turn based strategy game.

It doesn't have all the pretty graphics, but I think it still qualifies... Chess!

Well my favourite turn based strategy game was the Lords of Midnight series - although I have to say when I tried it out recently it had lost a little of it's appeal.

I actually used to play turn based strategy games in the 80s by Post - you sent in your move and then waited for reply in the mail

I was about to, but you beat me to it!

X-Com ranks alongside the Civ series in my 'All Time Best Turn-based Strategy games' list.

I loved the original in the early 90's, but X-Com Apocalypse in particular (released in 1999) was the best in the series in my opinion and is still very playable today if you can look past the outdated graphics (and get it to work outside of DOS!). Unlike all the X-Com remakes by other developers in the last decade, the aliens (evil) in Apocalypse actually have decent AI, and were actually a challenge to play against, plus there was about 20 other human factions you could fall out with as well if you felt like battling the local slum gangs instead for a change.

Many other developers have tried to remake X:Com since, most notably Altar with their 'UFO series', all I have seen are let down by poor quality AI and a lack of depth compared to X-Com though.
