Playstation Network Still Down - Accounts Compromised

Hey, i don't know if any of you have been following this recent news but here is some information for you to read.

User Account Information Compromised In PlayStation Network Attack

Quote:
Sony believes hackers obtained user account information, including home addresses, email addresses, birth dates, usernames and passwords, in an attack that has shut down the PlayStation Network for nearly a week.

The hackers may have also stolen credit card numbers, though Sony says there is no evidence to suggest this. Credit card security codes have not been compromised in either case.

Sony encourages all PSN and Qriocity users to be wary of scams, review account statements and monitor credit reports.

“We strongly recommend that you log on and change your password,” Sony said in a blog post that details ways to protect users against possible identity theft. “Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.”

The company expects to have both networks back online with at least partial service within a week.

PlayStation Network Remains Down Indefinitely After Hacker Attack

Quote:
Six days after Sony first announced that its Playstation Network had been experiencing difficulties, the network remains down.

Sony shut down both its PSN and Qriocity services last Wednesday after an “external intrusion.” The company has not given any indication as to when the network, which connects more than 70 million users for multi-player games, might be running again.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time,” reads the latest update from spokesman Patrick Seybold on the Playstation Blog.

Last Thursday, the same blog had cautioned that “it may be a full day or two” before the network was restored.

Angry Playstation users vented their woes on Twitter and on Playstation’s Facebook page, where each of three posts about the outage has accumulated more than 20,000 comments. Many threatened to buy a Microsoft Xbox, mentioned how bored they were without PSN, asked Sony to be more transparent about its rebuilding process or expressed anger at the hackers who allegedly attacked the network.

Some suspected that...

PlayStation Network Still Down; Sony Says it Will Return By May 4

If you have not been following this news then here is another update.

Quote:
As we move into day 11 of the PlayStation Network fiasco, Sony continues to rebuild its beleaguered network while apologizing profusely to users.

The latest update on the PlayStation Blog reassures users that law enforcement and technology security experts are investigating the April 17 breach. It took the company until Wednesday to admit that user data had been stolen.

User data is one thing, but credit card data is more serious. In a FAQ, Sony’s head of communications Nick Caplin writes, “The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken,” but in the next bullet point:

Sony to Resume PlayStation Network Services

Got some news for the Playstation Network users.

Sony to Resume PlayStation Network Services, Says “No Evidence” Credit Card Info Stolen

Quote:
Sony will resume some PlayStation Network services and beef up its security nearly two weeks after a hacker attack forced Sony to shut it down.

The company made the announcements during a press conference in Tokyo. Kaz Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president and the likely successor to CEO Howard Stringer, started by offering “our deepest and sincerest apologies” for the outage of the PlayStation network, as well as apologizing to customers whose personal information has been compromised. Hirai and two other Sony executives bowed deeply, a Japanese custom for apologizing.

Hirai confirmed that lots of users account information was stolen as the result of a hacker attack that has forced Sony to shut down PSN and Qriocity services for the last two weeks. Sony says that it was first alerted to the attack on April 20 and has been working with authorities and two security firms to investigate.

Of course they will deny the credit card info as nobody can prove it. Any fraud can't be linked to PSN.

Sony Details PlayStation Hack to Congress

Oops, i wanted to post this in here this morning and forgot.

Quote:
In a response to the U.S. House of Representatives about the recent PlayStation hack, Sony suggests the hacktivist group Anonymous may be behind the breach. The response says that a file named “Anonymous” was planted on PlayStation servers and it reportedly contains the words “We are Legion.”

However, the minds behind Anonymous, a loosely organized collection of hacktivists known for Scientologist-baiting and politically motivated DDoS attacks, said Anonymous had nothing to do with the PSN takedown.

As loosely organized as Anonymous is, however, it’s impossible to say that some part of Anonymous was or was not involved. But for a collective that tends toward pride over its exploits, an explicit denial of involvement is telling.

Another telling factor that points toward...

I don't care who hacked Sony, just fix the security loopholes and provide a more stable service.

Sony Misses Deadline To Restart PlayStation Network

Geez, this is taking forver.

Quote:
Sony’s PlayStation Network remains down after a hacker attack, despite the company’s reassurance last Sunday that it would have the network online again within a week.

The company closed the network as well as its Qriocity service on April 20. At the time, a PSN blog update optimistically suggested that it “may be a full day or two” before the service would be up and running again. Three weeks later, the situation looks more grim.

Sony has announced that user information from more than 100 million accounts was stolen during the attack and that this information may have included 2.2 million credit card numbers. Because of these breaches, Sony says it is going to rebuild the entire system.

A spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the delays in meeting the latest deadline were due to testing new security improvements.

Perhaps by 2012, this will be fixed. lol

btw, April 20th was my birthday.

It may not be done before the end of May. A pretty poor showing for a company who are so big. Source.

Amazon Servers Used in Sony Playstation Hack

O this is a interesting story i just read.

Quote:
Amazon servers may have been used to carry out the massive Playstation hack that compromised the personal information of more than 100 million Playstation Network users.

According to a report from Bloomberg, sources close to the ongoing investigation say the attack was mounted from Amazon Web Service’s cloud computing platform.

The hackers used fake personal information to set up an AWS account. They rented...

Play On – PSN Restoration Begins Now

If all of you Playstation folks have not heard the news right now, take a look at the sony blog post i am linking you to.

Quote:
Thank you for your patience and encouragement over the last few weeks. As covered in the post from earlier today, you can now update the firmware on your PS3 and change your password. Kazuo Hirai just announced that we have begun the phased restoration by region of some of the services, starting with online multiplayer functionality.

Please note that these services will take a bit of time to be turned on and rolled out to the whole country. The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient as we reach your city and state. We’ll be updating the map below as service comes online in individual states. It will take several hours to restore PSN throughout the entire country, so please keep checking back for the latest updates. In the meantime, now’s a great time to get your PS3’s firmware updated, which is required to get online.
