Wow, 40 years.

Wednesday is the 40th anniversary of Atari, a company known for putting joysticks into Americans’ hands and consoles into their homes before people had even heard of “video games.”

In 1972, weird cabinets started appearing at bars in California, displaying a rudimentary table tennis game for two players. While Pong quickly became a household name, it was actually built by one of the programmers as a simple test for Atari’s founder, Nolan Bushnell. It was the first commercially successful video game, spawning a line of home consoles sold through Sears, and encouraging Atari to make more games.

Atari went on to bigger success with its most popular home console, the Atari 2600. It also created the first handheld gaming system, the Lynx, before Nintendo’s Game Boy. The company faced many challenges, though, such as...

BTW......I had Atari when it first came out....loved to play Pong....
The in the 80s I found two 2600s and about two dozen games...at a yard sale....

The Atari sucked! I was there when it first came out. Pac man was freakin SQUARE for cryin out loud. Of course I did have a Journey game for the 2600 that was pretty cool. Appreciate the advances in gaming kiddies. Space Invaders was hella boring!

The first vide console I ever layed my eyes on was Atari. I was to young to understand what was happaning but it was really interesting. When I grew a bit older I changed my mind but that doesn't change the fact that they were the first.
