It depends - what on-board capabilities do you have? For example if you have a new motherboard or an APU then it's more capable than a 6 year old motherboard with on-board.

You could play DOOM, Quake 3 possibly, but you wouldn't be able to play Crysis. If you're not sure what your on-board GPU/APU is just let me know your motherboard make/model.

hmmm you would need a little GPU RAM for hitman. If I check my discs for system specs

For 1 and 2, you could play with on board, as it only needs about 32MB and 16MB respectively, but blood money, you would need a decent(ish) card. I played mine with my 1 gig Geforce, and wouldn't have played it any other way

The way I see it is, I would rather have a graphics card than rely on an onboard chip. It takes memory from your RAM, and this slows down a system a bit. Graphics cards prevent this and also help your system to function better in some cases (I know my Nvidia's do that) and besides that, comparing graphics from onboard to a graphics card is like comparing the drawing from a five year old to a drawing done by a famous artist. its a no contest for me (from what I've seen so its IMHO).

But Dan is right, some specs would be nice, just so we can see what we're dealing with. Even if its just motherboard make.

First of all, in most of casual games and old games with 2D graphics like Angry Birds, Fallout 1-2, Baldur's Gates, Zuma, Heroes of Might and Magic up to the 4th part. Such games are not demanding to your GPU even if it's on-board. Then, you can play a lot of actions like Quake (1-3), first Half-Life and it's add-ons, in fact you can play in most of actions released before, I think, 2006 year but here everything depends on your on-borad GPU. If you have something like Intel HD 3000 or AMD FM1-FM2 - they can deal with a lot of even rather modern games, so for more exact recommendations write here what videocard you have at the current moment.

Maybe you want to play toy games. Go for mario, pacma. This works without a graphic card.

depends on the on-board graphics card that you are using remember there have been an on-board which is using less graphic power than its real graphic cards. but if you have your present on-board you forgot Age of Empires hehe and the old Dune games that even runs on DOS or the old C&C games.

There's a fair few games I can play without having a GPU. Having a 5800k helps matters though .
