Just use the one XML sitemap for Google, and have a standard sitemap on your site that your visitors can use. Use 'geo' links and so on in the sitemap for visitors.

But you only submit the one XML sitemap to Google, it will find the normal one on your site anyway.

To be honest I see no benefit in the XML sitemap.

Build your site so the spiders can get through it and you will never need a sitemap.

I would just recommend XML sitemap for search engines and then a HTML sitemap for humans. You can check this article to read about different kinds of sitemap files if want to know when to use what.

If you submit a XML site map to Google, Google will index your site faster then no site map at all. And yes, have a HTML site map for visitors and other spiders.
Currently Mrs. Google is indexing sites faster when they are submited with a XML site map.

One sitemap, no matter how big, to google.

For visitors you can split it in more pages, if too big.
