I'm not sure I would say ranking is dead but it's not as important as it used to be. The fact is the smart SEOs are not just necessarily looking at the rankings. They are looking at conversion, they are looking at their server log. The problem is, some SEO's tend to focus more on rankings rather than traffic and conversions, yes we can get targeted traffic with Search Engines, but there are other traffic sources that are targeted other than SE's. This industry is huge and Search Engine Marketing is just a part.

In other words: look at what the public likes not what you want them to see.
