Its a fact
I don't know how your experiment is going, Phil and John, but I have an url listed in Google, that I never have submitted or linked to.
Nobody knew but me (and my Google Toolbar)

I like that sort of info, Gede. What's the URL? If you post it here, or even PM it, camouflage it so that there's no possibility of spiders seeing it. In fact, it's better camouflaged in a PM if you don't mind divulging it.
My thinking is that, even though nothing has ever linked to it, it doesn't surprise me that Google would know about it and even crawl it, but it does surprise me if they include it in the index without ever having seen a link to it. Maybe the indexing is temporary until they confirm to themselves that it has no IBLs - automatically, of course. I'd be interested in its progress.

For a single URL? I've assumed that it's a page on a site.

hm, it really does sound like the toolbar got the site indexed. Well, that might actually be a good thing because now, you need neither IBL nor do you need to use the Add URL form if this is true.

hm, that throws that theory out the window. But I'm still curious if google ads sites that have only been visited by users using the toolbar, without any links to that site.
If they want to include all sites in their search results, they technically should include all sites, also the ones that don't have links to them.

You can have a site in the index that doesn't have any links to it. It's pages that matter, and internal links count as links for each page within the site. I can't say that I've ever seen a site like that but I've heard of it happening and I see no reason for it not to happen with Google's system.

Ahem - the toolbar submits URL to Google, so I decree this particular experiment invalid.

Yes it does, but we haven't yet had definitive evidence that Google saves the URLs for spidering. So this evidence is worth having. In fact we could do with quite a few cases of it.

Somehow everyone misses the currency converter. I am going to do something about it.
