Outbound links to High ranked sites improves your ranking?

Hi

Im wondering if outbound linking with anchor text including your keyword, to the number one on a search engine would matter in ranking.

Funny thing is that i read about it on WMW about someone that tried it himself and that a link itself didnt bring any advantage but a targeted keyword, as in the title of the page as well, metatags etc and a link did bring him with the first ten of out of 4 million results.

Why should a free thing increase rank. If this was the case everyone would do it.

if they eventually start to focus on small clusters it can help you to link to related sites (which is often not a bad thing to do anyway). for now though I do not think it helps you a ton in search engines to link to other sites.

if a site is good for your visitors link on through to it.

I heard this one before and actually tried.
It did improve my position. Move from 13 place to 9.

you guys need to remember that a ton of factors play into your rankings. if people link to you and you don't know about it that will still improve your rankings.

if people stop linking to you or their links fall into the archives of their site then that link value goes down.

also remember that the rest of the web is dynamically changing with or without you.

it is hard to pick apart any single variable and conclusively state that this causes that.

I agree with you Awall19. But ....

Here is exactly what i did.
I had a position #13 for the "piercing needles" keyword.
I added a link to the article "Piercing Needles vs Piercing Gun" on tattoo.about.com which i would say is authority site and is ranked #1 for that phrase. Next day ( or 2 days after) my page went to #9 from #13.
It could be because i actually added that phrase on my page one more time. Or because of the link. I do not know.
But i doubt that this has hapened just because of the outside changes.
I've been on the position #13 for 2 monthes. And statistically i do not belive that in those 2 days there were changes that affected my site besides the changes i made.

But everything is possible. So i would love to hear someone else's experience. Or better yet make my own (I have couple phrases where i need to move my site up) and let you guys know.

i have never specifically optimized for a term yet I appear for it

I have traded links with some of the people in the top postion for the term

I'm not sure if just having the text in the outbound link

or maybe it has to do with who i am linking to

or maybe its just a way easy term and just sounds hard

I definelty think that having outbound links with key phrases in them

does make your site appear for that term somewhere although

I doubt it usually does too much
