Would posting a link on unused forums result in a penanalty?

Hi

im wondering if whenever i post my links on old forums would that get me in trouble eventually with being penalised or is google still not able to match the link and its anchor text with the content of the forum..... read something about an expert-system(Adsense) so i was wondering

I very much doubt you will be penalised as anyone could post your link to a forum.

search engines do not keep track of forum posters IP addresses. they usually couldn't, and it would generally be a waste of time.

Google really is not as advanced as what many people think. that is why many SEOs are still in business

A link from another page to your site should never get your banned or penalized. Only linking to a banned site from your own page will hurt you.

This is true...if your compteition could do something to get your site banned they probably would. For instance, i could post a million links to your site on spammy pages such as Freeforalls, Blogs & forums, and it wouldn't affect a thing. It's only when your site links to these penalized/spammy pages...that's when you get into trouble.

Of course, not all links are created equally. Simply putting up your link on an old forum is going to be a pretty worthless endeavour - forum links are already well devalued.

I disagree on this part i have seen some different outcomes on posting links on old forums.... Some of the links popup really high in the serps.. Maybe that has to do with the pagerank of the forum.. However couldnt u state that a link is a link and that it counts as a backlink

crazyhorse, search engines such as Google have multiple tricks for devaluing links to try and create better "quality" results.

There's a small list of the public patents here:
http://www.seo-lab.com/google-articles/google-papers/

Links are not all valued equally.
