Hi all,

Sorry to ask such a boring question, but does anyone have a ruff idea of when the next google update is??

Also for members who have a dmoz listing, how long did you find it took before your listing was also placed in the google directory??

Do you mean a PR update? If so they usually occur toward the end of the month. I am finding that my sites are getting updated every few days.

It does not take long to show up in google once you are in the open directory. No longer than any other site...if anything DMOZ gets spidered more often, so it should show up sooner rather than later.

It can take a long time, in my case 8 months to get into Dmoz. (and im still not in)

Google PR takes 1 month to show on the toolbar, your added to google as soon as google finds some backlinks.

The google directory isn't updated very often. I think only 2 or 3 times last year.

I haven't noticed any updates within the past 1 and a half months... and its probably been longer than that.

The question was how long does it take to get into the Google Directory after getting listed by DMOZ.

The answer is: unknown. Google gets its Directory information from DMOZ but has not updated its DMOZ very frequently in the past year or so. They also "demoted" the Directory a few months back, which suggests that they may be even less interested in updating now than previously.

That doesn't mean that DMOZ is necessarily less important to your ranking in the Google search engine results - it is and always was a backlink and probably not more than that.

Edit: curse these slow fingers! I see BoatOwner posted the answer while I was still composing mine

Thanks all.

I was lucky enough to get listed in dmoz last week, so hopefully it should help towards getting my new site found and indexed etc..

Funny really, I dont think ive ever read anyone saying about the benefits of being listed in the Google directory.. surely a link from there should do wonders for a site?

Anyhow, thx

You would be surprised how little traffic the Dmoz link will send. What does help is all the other directory sites that use Dmoz information... although they are typically low PR they do give some PR and backlinks.

Getting listed in DMOZ used to be much more important than it is today.

Yeah im aware that it will not bring in much traffic, but I suppose for a new website (and a newbie to the seo world ) its a good start.

The way I see it is, starting a new website from scratch, is almost like building a house..

with good foundations i.e. (dmoz, yahoo, blue find, wow, etc links) your given yourself a good base to build on.. then its all about working your way up.

One thing is for certain.. a dmoz listing is certainly not going to hurt my site

Anyhow, I've really appreciated all the advice everyone in this forum has given me, and hopefully one day I'll be able to give good advice to new members starting their journey on getting lots of traffic

Ta

I think DMOZ is a waste of your time. First, they are too slow, second there a better and quicker ways of getting links.

hmmm..

It took approx 3 mins to submit..

After 2 months,(and not spending everyday seeing if it was listed) it was listed..

Unless I was Bill Gates, id imagine that I can afford to take 3 minutes out of my working day.

It will take a few cycles to be dumped into the Google direcotry.... Figure three months from the date your excepted into DMOZ..... You'll get a backlink in the serps first but it takes a few times for the Directory to scoop you up.......

As far as an update............. For some reason I'm epecting on esooner this time..... I really don't know why - I just have a feeling it will be soon...

Once our link was in DMOZ - It appeared in Yahoo! very quickly (within a week or two) and it appeared in Google results after the next update (about a month and a half)

Haven't seen any traffic from the DMOZ link, but it is a PR 5 backlink to our site, which is nice for any site. They may not provide traffic directly, but a link in DMOZ will definately help out newer sites that need backlinks.

The next google update will be on July or by August. Google updates backlink and pagerank every three month. It takes a months or even years to be approved in DMOZ. It is not easy to be listed in DMOZ, sometimes they didnt approved the site.
