Page redirecting

I have 2 sites which have been working at consolidating into one site. I would like to take the index.html page from site 1 and redirect it to index.html on site 2. Does this cause a problem with Google or anything else.

I am forwarding this specific page because I dont want to loose any of the search engine page links on site 1

PageRank (and rankings) pass transparently through 301 redirects.

So I could remove the index.html on site one place a .htaccess file which redirects the index page as a 404 and I will not have any problem with google or anyone else.

Thats probably a weak way of doing it.

You don't need to remove the index.html file to do the redirect.

When we changed from www.internet-marketing-research.net to www.v7n.com we left the old files in place, and placed 301 redirects in. The links to www.internet-marketing-research.net will be counted as links to www.v7n.com after Google picks up on it - usually in one update or two.

cpanel does it, but you can also do it manually by creating a .htaccess file. depending on what you are doing with your .htaccess file you may need to CHMOD it to set the permissions too.

Does this go for redirecting pages too as in the following example:

url: http://www.mysite.com/cig_search?info?categoryid=122

if you wanted it to simply display as: http://www.mysite.com/category-name.html

would you do a 301 redirect for that? would it even make a difference and be worth redirecting to 'clean up' the url

Thanks.

the best way to clean up URLs is via mod rewrite.
