Unhappy Disappearing Backlinks

Less than 3 weeks ago if I searched link:midwestsportsman.net the results would show over 100 backlinks. Today the same search returns 1. What happened and why? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

100 back-links on google is a great number my frnd. The numbers must have disappeared may be because you might have got temporary links and they are no longer there now to support your site. This can happen if you got some links for say a particular period of time may be a paid link for 1-2 months and did not renew it.

So, to be permanently in the rankings, you need to build permanent links.

Were those links coming from directories, forums, blog post?

Maybe where you had most of yourlinks, the nofollow tag was installed. Maybe a lot of the sites where you had your links went off line.

But then again, the link: command does not report all of your links.

Go into your google webmaster tools, that is where you should be checking your links anyway.

Use your google webmaster tools or Yahoo site explorer. Both of those will give you an idea of how many backlinks you have.

Between the two, yahoo site explorer seems to pick up more links then google webmaster tools. So set up your site explorer account and go from there.

It means that the link:command doesn't give accurate results now and it used to do it before.
It'll give you some but not all.
I guess Google didn't want to become a "spy tool" for both legitimate link building and spammers.

Cool Google's backlinks listing is one mysterious thing...

Google is always refreshing the backlink numbers. There are some backlinks which are listed for years, there are new ones every time, and there are some backlinks which appearing and disappearing time to time. Google's backlinks listing is one mysterious thing...

Use Yahoo's for fix result.

well this is the case everywhere

many of my clients have complained about the same

no one knows what's wrong and we cant even ask Google about it.

Just dont have to worry as long as it shows backlinks in your Webmaster tools.

I agree with that, but not even Google Webmaster Tool and Yahoo WT shows the same link number.

And you cannot count your competitors backlinks number with Google WT, but can with Yahoo.

How do you know what's realistic if none of these tools gives realistic number?

With Google WT and backlinkwatch.com you can get realistic results.
