If you lose half of inbound links ...

Let's say that you had 100 inbound links with various PR. Let's say that your site has 1000 pages in a hierarchical structure. PR is spread around the site nicely.

q1. What happens if you lose half of inbound links?

q1.2. Will the PR of the home page drop in the next PR update?

q1.3. Will PR of subdirectories/pages linked from the home page drop in the next PR update?

q1.4. How about in the next next update?

The trouble with backlinks totals is that they never actually tell you the ranking value of those links - I've had sites change backlink no. on Google by a factor of 10 both ways, yet have no real observable effect on the SERPs for my key targeted search terms.

Well, let's just say that you know you exchanged links with 50 other websites and you got your website listed in 50 search directories. For some reason, you lose half of those, what then?

If subpages are not essential PR sources*, roughly it should drop by 0.5
(log_4 1/2).

*: I mean if they are not too many.

Do you mean the links to your site have been removed or google just isn't reporting them as backlinks?

If they have been removed - your pr may go down.

If they are still there but google just isn't reporting them - no change - pr stays the same.

Have a look at Compar's pr chart here:

Links to my site have been removed. For example, I stop paying for links; links will disappear. I remove reciprocal links; links will disappear. Etc. etc.

So ... if Google catches this before its next back link update, then PR will go down. Is that correct?

No one knows when the next PR/Backlink update is, so I wouldn't focus on PR too much anymore.
