Does subdomain damage traffic of whole site?

Hi all,

I have a site with 1 sub domain. This site and first sub domain have a good traffic. But when I create second sub domain (this sub domain has very poor traffic), traffic of main domain and first sub domain were down seriously. Main domain and 2 sub domains are made for different topics.

I have two question:
1. Does the second sub domain with poor traffic decrease traffic of whole site?
2. When I make a new topic, I should create a new website with new domain or I should create a sub domain in an existing site? Does Google "love" domain more than sub domain?

Thanks in advance.

No it won't affect your rankings at all.

Google is no longer treating subdomains (blog.widgets.com versus widgets.com) independently, instead attaching some association between them. The ranking algorithms have been tweaked so that pages from multiple subdomains have a much higher relevance bar to clear in order to be shown.

It’s not that the “two page limit” now means from any domain and its associated subdomains in total. It’s simply a bit harder than it used to be for multiple subdomains to rank in a set of 10 results. If multiple subdomains are highly relevant for a query, it’s still possible for all of them to rank well.

Hi,

Sub domain will not effect your site any how.

According to me most of webmasters use redirection way to earn more traffics from subdomains.

Sub domains can help you if you are managing them by good way.

Thanks

I actually wrote this article for how to choose if you should use a new domain or subdomain for your blog, but it really fits for anytime you are trying to choose between the two.

I personally think that your second domain is not the cause of the damage to your traffic. There must be another reason.

And I think you should make a new sub-folder for every separate blog/site you want to add. Matt Cutts recently mentioned in a video that Google no longer love to see subdomains as some people are using them in a spammy way. He said that we should create sub-folders instead of sub-domains.

maybe the traffic are splitting on those pages, since domain and subdomain are consider different pages when it comes to rankings..

and by the way what web stats you are using, and are you using the same on both??
