Google doesn't recognize backlinks
Why would Google only recognize 4 of our backlinks when Yahoo has 801?
No inner page links are recognized by Google and there are a boatload of them.
I could use a referral for a great someone who knows SQL, Google ranking, and successful, well ranking real estate listing website creation. We have a 5 year old site and I think we have serious structural problems beyond our ability to diagnose.
We also have 2-3000 pages, many optimized, and Google has cached only 140 after all this time.
The site has been languishing as we get sick of beating our heads against the wall working and spending money galore and still rank somewhere in the millions.
Any suggestions?

Big G doesn't give all/exact details about your site using the link: query tool.
Much better to sign in to your webmaster tools.

You are using the link: operator to check backlinks right?
If yes, then I suggest you use Google Webmaster Tools or Yahoo Explorer to check backlinks. The link operator only show a sample of the backlinks that a site have.

That's just the way G is. It doesn't show you everything, not when using the link: operator, and not in Webmaster Tools either. Google sees everything on the net so it's not something to worry about, just continue your link building.

I wish I knew.
Some forums you can make 100 post with a signature link, and google will register all 100 post. Some forums you can make 100 post and google will only find 5 out of that 100.
What this means is you need to focus on sites that give you the most backlinks and the fastest.
Some forums I have posted on, 2 - 3 years later and google has not found the links I posted. On one forum, I have over 500 post with a signature link, and google has not find a single one of those links. And those post are 3+ years old.
So you need to keep an eye on your google webmaster tools and your yahoo site explorer tools and see which sites are giving you the best return.

I think Google only shows a sample of back links using link operator. You can view all back links in webmasters tools.

yahoo seems to do a better job of indexing and listing backlinks, at least that is how it seems to me, so I am not surprised to hear this story. I happened to check my google webmaster for the first time tonight in well over a week and was surprised at how few of the backlinks appears there. though i can't view them all in yahoo, yahoo must have or at least noted about 3 times as many - a more exact number.
though i will say google must know a lot more than it tells (though yahoo has some 30 billion pages indexed and google around 18 billion, so maybe yahoo is out there getting and indexing more)
crabby, real estate is a very competitive market so you need a pro, but it's beyond me to know who to recommend or how to deal with your problems there.

If you are using Google's link: search it will only show a smal portion of backlinks. Try Google's webmaster tools for a more accurate reading, better yet yahoo seems to count pretty much everything. With your pages not being indexed what helped me was building links directly towards my sub pages and/or blog posts some have even matched the PR of the main.

Google does not like to show backlinks.
May because backlinks check often only be used by personal.

if you are using link: command to know backlinks through G, then make sure that it will show you (not sample of links) only important links and not all of them.
To cache more of your pages - Generate a sitemap through any sitemap generator and submit it into Google webmaster's account.

Good question. I am also having same doubt for long time. Each search engine has different algorithm to crawl the pages. it may be reason for back link lack on google.

That is the way google roles. They never show as many as Yahoo. It does not matter if it is in the webmasters tools or just doing the link:yoururl you will never see all the back links to your site.

Crabby Bill,
Google doesn’t show all inbound links deliberately. Due to competition, force us to make good useful choices.
