Gmail; Is it all that its hyped up to be?

There hasnt been such a frenzy for something since the great cabbage patch craze of the 80's. Everyone wants one and hardly anyone has any real use for one. Why do you want one? Because johny next door has one? Because uncle sal got one and if you dont have one by Thanksgiving you will be the laughting stock of the family?

Who really needs a gig of e-mail storage? Who really needs to search their e-mail messages?

Gmail is gonna reviliounize the way we use e-mail? NOT. I have been using a gmail account for a few months now and you know what. I still dump 99% of the messages that land in my inbox after reading them. The one thing I like about it is the fact I have yet to get spam into my inbox. But you can get the same benifit by just moving free e-mail accounts every so often.

About the only thing good about getting an early gmail account was the ability to have an e-mail address that didnt have to include your zipcode or your birth year inorder to have it be something that was not taken already.

Yeah, exactly! I wish they would move the 'Delete Forever' button to the inbox.

I like Gmail, but it's nothing revolutionary. Hitting 'Archive' and then using keywords to search the emails is pretty nice.

I have a Yahoo! account as well. If I had to pick one over the other, I'd go with Gmail. Just because I hate the giant flashing ads Yahoo! has. And because I'm sick of having email from people I know delivered to my bulk mail folder.

Google are perceived to be cool and everyone loves them, their cool little logo and their cool little naming standards. Tbh Google pisses me off, in some ways like MS.

I think the conversations feature is the most revolutionary, I like being able to send 40 emails to someone and have it all archived under a single tab.

I don't get the hype myself. If you own a domain, chances are, email is included with it. If I need to search for a certain email, I can use the Find feature in OE.

I haven't a clue exactly what Gmail is, but to me it sounds like just another free email? Hell, there's thousands of those offered on the www.

As for someone's comparison to Microsoft, I agree. Both companies are nothing more then legal rackateering to me.

Gmail is my fave email account. On 56K it is much faster than hotmail when navigating through the site. The 1GB storage is also great, and the spam filter has filtered almost every spam message I have received.

Gmail offers a notify feature now. Click on 'Settings' in your account and look toward the bottom of the page.

You don't have to have a browser open for it to be able to notify you.

In mine there's a link, "Get the Gmail notifier".

It's for Windows only:
http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/

Same here, I don't see that feature.

I think a G mail service is quite par for the course, and am very surprised it hasn't come about sooner. G wants your soul, they'll just have to fight MS for it. Might have to merge for total domination.

I think it's likely to see great benefits incorporated into g-mail in the future, that will be sure to convert the majority.

I sold my soul to the company store.

I logged in, had a look at the features, and it looks nice, very fast interface, it doesn't give you a web GUI feel. But I stick to my POP accounts.

Yeah, I like the feel of it. Makes you think it's an app rather than a web based email.
