Google Voice
Have you heard of Google Voice?
Here is an interesting articles stating 5 reasons why you should use it, and 5 reasons why you should think twice:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/16742...ink_twice.html
For the privacy reason alone, I don't think I'll use it. Plus it seems like a lot of "setting up" is needed.
People like easy stuff. Phones ready to go, putt the lasagna from the freezer to the oven and forget about it for an hour etc....
I don't see that being a huge hit for now.

It's true that it can be very useful, but I'm very much concerned about the privacy thing...
I would love to try but I don't want anyone else keeping records of my personal life

Disregard the late night calls, I just can't imagine people knowing my personal conversations with my family and friends... and they're just walking along with you on the streets and under their shirt is your little secrets Even if Google employs the kindest and most caring person to do this job I still won't feel comfortable.
I really want to try out this service but I'm too afraid, I wish they can have an alternative solution for this...

Wow, Thanks for this information. But I personally have found this a very good idea. I think this will greatly help many people who have problem of having many phone numbers. Google Voice will help them manage things very easily.

Telecomunication companies also collect stats but they don't try to make things personalized e.g. ads, search results etc.
Giving so much personal information can be risky in case of security breach in Google's servers. I am not saying that it'll happen but it may.

I just got invited to Google Voice. I got a free number. The way I figure is that it is free. If you don't want to use it - then don't use it. But it's a free number so why not?
I can see it coming in handy for someone that multitasks a lot or has 8 children with cell phones.
Basically, it aims to make 1 telephone number the center for all telephone numbers.
A good example of use is one of my friends. He has a cell phone for personal, cell phone for work, a work number, a 1-800 number, and a Skype number. He changes his cell phones ALL the time because he's either quitting or getting fired from part time jobs. I can never track him.
So if he gets this number and it rings all of his numbers at once, that's really handy for someone like me who likes to talk with him instead of leaving 4 freaking voicemails.
Plus if he ever moves across the country, I can still get in touch with him
And you know Google - down the road they will release more services for it - probably a Fax service to name one. It already has a website number feature - you click on someone's link, it dials your phone you pick up, then it dials out.
It also has cheap rates for long distance. And FREE SMS so you can tell cell phone companies to stick up their butts.
As for privacy, that is always a concern. But unless you're doing something illegal (growing weed, planning to blow yourself up, or selling crack) or are simply paranoid by nature, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I applied for this last week, or the week before. Haven't heard anything back if I get accepted or not.
Has anyone gotten their number setup yet?

They purchased about 1 million telephone numbers recently. I'd imagine all the hardcore geeks such as myself already applied to be notified when numbers became available. I got mine on Friday but applied roughly 3 weeks ago.
Just sign up and wait patiently.

Concerned about private info stored in the cloud? Check out Google Health if you haven't heard of it yet - with me it was a speechless *thud once I learned about it.
